‘The Wheel of Time’ Episode 5 review: ‘Damane’

Killing is as easy as dying.

This piece was written during the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Without the labor of the writers and actors currently on strike, the work being covered here wouldn’t exist.

The story so far: After weeks of seemingly preparing Nynaeve to choose an Ajah – preferably Red – Liandrin shows her true colors. Rand has been in hiding with a woman named Selene. Moraine returns to help Rand in bloody fashion. While hunting for the Horn of Valere, Perrin is almost captured. Even though he has not fully accepted them, his new abilities help him escape. A new powerful force begins an invasion to retake the lands they believe are theirs.

The Wheel of Time has moved at a quick pace this season. There have been revelations, betrayals, and new characters. Still, the show has managed to bring heavy emotion to each episode. This multilayered storytelling has made for stronger engagement. Episode five slows things down without forsaking any of the excitement. Moraine shows how far she is willing to go to keep Rand safe while Perrin helps a new friend. The quieter moments have a tension that underscore the dangers of each situation.

“Damane” gives further insight into the mysterious Seanchan. Their brutality has been showcased, but the episode hints that their actions may be due more to custom than outright cruelty. The Ever Victorious Army are definitely a threat, though it would be wrong to call them outright evil.

After weeks of hiding in plain sight, The Wheel of Time gives an idea of the full extent of Lanfear’s power. In the span of one episode she radiates a new power and evil about her. As Selene, she was already intriguing. Now, there is an allure to her. A strong argument can be made that there are too many villains in the series, but it is not a problem, yet.

'The Wheel of Time' Episode 5 review: 'Damane'

On the contrary, watching the interactions between the antagonists is a highlight of the show. There is obvious distrust between them (this was a big part of Robert Jordan’s books) and every moment they have together is filled with tension. This not only adds more depth to the story, it also seems to be the only opportunity the heroes have to actually succeed.

There are a lot of moving pieces in The Wheel of Time, and it can be overwhelming at times. Each new character brings more lore and secrets. Characters have to be put to the wayside in order to progress the story. Still, the series is able to keep it all together and has presented audiences with one of the most exciting shows on streaming.
