Fantastic Five: The best comics of the week of September 20, 2023

The best comics of the week this week feature a healthy mix of three publishers.

Happy Friday, and welcome back to another edition of Fantastic Five! The best comics of the week this week feature a healthy mix of two DC comics, two Marvel comics, and one Image comic. Let’s take a look!

#5: Nocterra #16

Fantastic Five: The best comics of the week of September 20, 2023

Overall, this is a great issue in a similarly great series that has remained rather captivating as the story progressed. Additionally, this issue does a stellar job tying up many loose threads while leaving a lot of potential for future adventures. While this isn’t the end of the series forever, readers will have to wait a bit longer to find out how the Sundog Convoy reacts to the massive changes brought to the world. Nocterra #16 is a very strong issue that ends in a fulfilling manner.

#4: Alpha Flight #2

Fantastic Five: The best comics of the week of September 20, 2023

Alpha Flight #2 is a brilliant return to a complicated narrative. Its focus on the marginalized mutants helps to set it apart from the rest of the line, but its themes tie it directly to the Fall of X. Even with limited space, every character gets a moment to shine. With conflicts continuing to build, this book is standing out as one of the best that the X-Men books have to offer.

#3: Nightwing #106

Fantastic Five: The best comics of the week of September 20, 2023

Nightwing returns after a two-month hiatus and kicks things off rather well. Both stories successfully deliver a strong narrative that makes for an enjoyable read. Similarly, the issue is beautifully drawn and colored by a great pair of artists and superstar colorist who tackles both stories. Moreover, Nightwing #106 is a can’t-miss issue.

#2: Predator vs. Wolverine #1

Fantastic Five: The best comics of the week of September 20, 2023

Smartly done, Predator vs. Wolverine leans into the feral side of both its leads, showcasing their fighting ability and storied battle starting in 1900. As a four-part series, I can’t wait to see how the relationship between these two killers evolves over a century and how mutual respect may form due to it. Capturing the brutality of both heroes, this Predator vs. Wolverineis a bloody good time.

#1: Wonder Woman #1

Fantastic Five: The best comics of the week of September 20, 2023

I can only imagine the political and social commentary going on in this book will annoy some, but it’s books like this that move the needle and feel important in our daily discourse. Wonder Woman #1 is an intelligent thriller with a complex story looking at our culture composed for modern comic readers. Along the way, it features Wonder Woman showing off her abilities while trying to navigate a complex situation that only she can resolve. She’s the target against an enemy threatening all of America because she may be the only thing to save us.
