Sony announces mid-generation PlayStation 5 refresh

The new PlayStation 5 drops in November, and will hopefully be easier to obtain than the original.

Ahead of the holiday season, Sony has announced a new PlayStation 5 model to go on sale in November at select retailers in the United States and on direct.playstation.com. Revealed today on the PlayStation Blog, the new PS5 model will be “reduced in volume by more than 30%, and weight by 18% and 24% compared to the previous models.” It ships with a 1TB SSD internal storage, which is slightly more than the 825GB of the original model. With how large game installs are nowadays, you’ll need every GB available.

Also being released at a later date is an external Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive. It’ll be $79.99 and compliments the digital-only PS5 model both for future PS5 owners and those who bought the base digital-only model and grew to miss having a disc drive.

The new PlayStation 5 models will retail for $499.99 for the disc drive model and $449.99 for the digital-only model. With the faceplate redesign, new colors will also be available in early 2024 and will retail for $54.99: all-matte Black, Volcanic Red, Cobalt Blue, and Sterling Silver. The new PS5 models will also launch around the same time as Sony’s PlayStation Portal, the handheld streaming device releasing on November 15.

The post notes that “Once inventory of the current PS5 model has sold out, the new PS5 will become the only model available.” Meaning if you want the cheaper digital edition (the OG model retails for $399.99), scoop it up while you can!

Head on over to the PlayStation Blog for the full rundown of specs.
