‘Star Wars: Darth Vader by Greg Pak Vol. 7: Unbound Force’ review

Greg Pak’s storytelling gives new life to Darth Vader while keeping him approachable to casual fans.

While the Star Wars comic line may appear superfluous when compared to the films and live action TV shows, it continues to be one of the best shared universes published by Marvel, with some incredible creative talent digging into different corners of the universe with surprising finesse. Now on its seventh TPB volume, Greg Pak’s Darth Vader series simply shows that even ubiquitous characters like the infamous Sith Lord can be given new vivacity and energy when placed in capable hands.

Collecting Darth Vader #33-36 and some of issue #3 from the character’s previous series, this book focuses on Darth Vader losing control of the Force, and in his exchange with the Handmaiden Sabé, he looks for answers that may work against the Emperor’s wishes. Pulling in Doctor Aphra and the killer assassin bots Triple-Zero and Beetee, the ragtag group eventually sees their goal on Geonosis, only after lurching through a group of droids fighting for rights and a recognition of their sentience. It’s not radical in its storytelling approach, but every page is such a satisfying read that the entire collection is elevated thanks to the plotting and design choices.

Greg Pak continues to bring his A-game to this monthly title, giving each issue clear narrative focus and motion, while not bogging it down in too much Star Wars lore or continuity. If you only know Darth Vader from the main trilogy, this series of issues will be quite accessible; but for fans of the larger canon like myself, there are ample nods to the grander storyline. It’s a difficult task, writing prequel tales for such an iconic character, but Pak is doing an excellent job as this book enters its fourth year in publication.

Art Gorham and Raffaele Ienco each provide art to two sequential issues, and their work is masterful. From the highly animated action scenes that could sit comfortably next to some of the best superhero books on the shelves, or the detailed tech and droid designs, the quality of artistic craftsmanship in the Star Wars office at Marvel is something to behold. I can’t say enough good things about the way both artists bring their distinct styles and energy to this title, while keeping the tone visually consistent. Federico Blee’s colors are also worthy of praise, giving the entire book a lively yet appropriate Star Wars complexion.

There are a couple variant covers collected, and all are given the full-page reproduction, which is always appreciated.  These trades rarely provide many supplementals, but for the meager asking price for this trade, that is to be expected.

There are many mediums in which fans can approach the Star Wars Universe, but with the quality of the comics being published, I hope that these stories begin to reach the audience faithfully watching the Disney+ live action shows. The quality of Pak’s storytelling is simply top notch and would surely be relished by any fan of Star Wars.
