NYCC 2023: Marvel Fanfare features Legends, Young Guns, and Stormbreakers talking careers

Revealed at Marvel Fanfare, McNiven’s secret project is a ‘love letter to Frank Miller.’

Some of Marvel’s finest joined editor-in-chief C.B. Cebulski on stage today at NYCC’s Marvel Fanfare panel. Lucas Werneck, Elena Casagrande, Adi Granov, Steve McNiven, Frank Miller, and John Romita Jr. talked about their careers and gushed over each other’s talent and wonderful art pieces.

A new project from the ever-evolving Steve McNiven was teased during the panel, with Cebulski letting slip he’s working with Charles Soule on it. McNiven described it as “my love letter to Frank Miller,” the artwork is certainly reminiscent of the legend. It features a character that may or may not be Daredevil/Matt Murdock walking through a graveyard and getting a bit of a beat down. Also pictured is a dastardly figure holding Captain America’s shield. With that evil grin, you know he’s up to no good.

The panel acted as a retrospective for the artists, with Adi Granov telling us how he was broke and living alone when Cebulski sent him an email 20 years ago offering work at Marvel. He accepted and ultimately created the iconic Iron Man/superhero landing pose on his first cover. Miller called his Silver Surfer cover “one of the most original, beautiful portraits” of the character.

Cebulski showed a cover of Rom Spaceknight by Miller, which Miller called “the finest moment of my career. I was able to buy a mansion in Malibu with money from selling the original” of the cover.

The panelists were quipping like Spider-Man this afternoon, with John Romita Jr. joking, “Having Romita Sr. fix everything I did was wonderful.” He said he uses people’s comments that he’s only successful because of his father as motivation, and later joked that “the mortgage invoice” is what keeps him inspired. In a more serious manner, Romita Jr. said he wants to compete with the people coming up, like his fellow panelists Lucas Werneck and Elena Casagrande, two of Marvel’s rising star artists.
