This look at some of the short films screening at the Brooklyn Horror Film Festival includes blood, laughs, and just overall weirdness. Some of the plots may be familiar – the fear that comes with introducing your romantic partner to your parents, people reevaluating their lives – but they are filled with creativity. Below are some more must see shorts playing at the fest.
Fck’ng Nuts
Laughs and terror are a natural combination. Sure, there have been movies like Shaun of the Dead, but laughter also brings relief. Think of how audiences giggle with each other after a particularly good jump scare. Filmmaker Sam Fox checks off all the right boxes in Fck’ng Nuts. No joke is too corny and no special effect too disgusting in this colorful short. Silly, over the top, and everything that is right about comedy horror.
Murder Camp
What happens when a horror movie villain has decided he wants something different out of life? A pair of great performances highlight this short about a supernatural killer trying to find himself and move on with his life. A number of laugh out loud moments that culminate in a great ending.
Oddities
If you have ever wondered what would happen if Quentin Tarantino directed an episode of The Twilight Zone, this is the short for you. A young man and woman decide to rob a curio shop and end up with more than they bargained for. Genre icon Adrienne Barbeau also stars in this story that would fit perfectly in any anthology.
Pruning
Horror has never shied away from making social commentary. Pruning is about a right wing commentator whose life is affected by a horrible tragedy. Less about politics and more about choice and how living in an echo chamber can convince people to make painful choices.
Sylvie Made It (Sylvie l’a fait)
Anybody who has ever worked in a call center knows it is a special kind of hell. This Belgium release takes things literally as it focuses on a woman who is working hard in order to be with her son. Perfectly captures the rat race of office life and how sometimes there is nothing to do but to put blinders on and just look forward.
