‘Captain Ginger: The Last Feeder’ #1 returns to an AHOY favorite

AHOY continues to prove that they’re secretly one of the best publishers around.

It’s been five years since Captain Ginger and his crew space faring felines first arrived on store shelves. Where does the time go? The Last Feeder, a two-part special that commemorates the anniversary, asks the question: what happened to the human race? There’s a sense of homecoming here with Stuart Moore and June Brigman returning to the AHOY original. On top of that, the issue also sees part nine of the Alex Segura prose serial. How many prose serials are there these days?

There’s something comfy about Captain Ginger. AHOY Comics burst onto the scene back in 2018 which genuinely feels like a lifetime ago. Think about your nearest main street and ask yourself how many businesses have survived since 2018? How many bars and restaurants from your town/ city are still around from 2018? So it’s a real heartwarming feeling to know that AHOY is still around. They’ve been consistently putting out books you wouldn’t see anywhere else. From the comics themselves to the backup materials, no one does it like AHOY. That’s worth celebrating, and that’s what The Last Feeder feels like.

Returning to one of the first books they put out, Moore and Brigman are back with this two-part victory lap. With two parters there’s not a lot of time to hook a reader, especially with so many books on the shelves. So this issue introduces the two central mysteries: Captain Ginger’s father, and the fate of the human race. Not bad at all. For those that have been reading AHOY since the beginning, this story will mean more, but the central premise of cats in space makes it a fun read for any comic fan.

The artwork is as great as you should expect from Brigman. Especially so given so much of the issue is cats talking. The large shots of space will always be something to behold. The coloring from Veronica Gandini really stands out. The orange/teal color scheme adds to the comfy feeling the return to Captain Ginger creates.

Captain Ginger: The Last Feeder #1 is a stellar return to an AHOY original. With it being only two issues it’s clear that AHOY sees its future in new books but this is still a thank you to those who have stuck around since the beginning. When you finish the comic and reach Segura’s prose story you really should ask yourself how many prose serials you can think of in contemporary publishing. You can even expand your thoughts outside of the comic industry. AHOY continues to prove that they’re secretly one of the best publishers around.
