‘Sister of Darkness: Chronicles of a Modern Exorcist’ review: Real stories from the world’s only secular exorcist

Coming to FX soon.

Sister of Darkness: Chronicles of a Modern Exorcist introduces readers to the world’s only non-denominational exorcist. R.H. Stavis has helped thousands of people ranging from small children to the rich and famous. When she was a child, Stavis ignored the gift to see things that others could not. As an adult, she made the decision to use her abilities to help others. The book chronicles some of the frightening experiences that shaped her life.

Obviously, this is the kind of book that you need to go in with an open mind. While it is not necessary to completely believe in the occult or supernatural, a person who chooses to read Sister of Darkness cannot go in looking for things to disprove or events to fact check. Stavis’s story is best looked at as self-help or motivational. There are some things that will draw its audience in while other s are a little more far fetched and wild.

Which is not to say that Sister of Darkness is a map that will change a person’s life entirely. The author spends a lot time talking about what she has learned and how it can help, but there are also a number of stories to be found. While a few do come off as a little too familiar (Stavis is also a screenwriter), many of them deliver the intended scares. Both can be seen in the opening chapter that does an excellent job of pulling in the audience.

Many of them deliver the intended scares.

It all combines for a refreshing take on exorcisms that is both entertaining and enlightening. Stavis explains what she has seen, and how it affects everyday life for many. There is a lot of theatricality – but that is true of any memoir. Sister of Darkness: Chronicles of a Modern Exorcist is a breezy read that will surprise many.

Sister of Darkness: Chronicles of a Modern Exorcist is available on digital and in bookstores
