RIP Comixology: App to no longer exist starting December 4, 2023

The Comixology app to be merged into Kindle starting December 4, 2023.

Amazon has revealed the Comixology app as we know it will no longer exist starting December 4, 2023. As detailed on Amazon.com, the Comixology and Kindle applications on iOS, Android, and Fire OS will be merging, and Comixology will no longer be available for use.

Users can use the Kindle app to read graphic novels and manga titles. Users can also utilize read.amazon.com. The change won’t affect users’ current libraries. The Comixology Unlimited subscriptions will also not be affected.

The news isn’t incredibly surprising, as the Comixology app has been struck with a string of issues since it merged with Amazon.com. While Amazon had been updating the app as recently as 2022, it has been quite some time since they’ve updated users on experience improvements.

The app was first launched in 2007, with Amazon acquiring the company in 2014. It was smooth sailing until Head of Content Chip Mosher stepped down, and then ComiXology co-founder/CEO David Steinberger also stepped down from ComiXology in March 2022. Those staff happened to leave after Comixology.com was decommissioned, and users reported multiple issues with the user experience.

While the app is dead, the digital comics reading experience will live on with Kindle. There have also been new competitors entering the market of late, like GlobalComix.

Here’s the full rundown on what to expect shared by Amazon:

What’s happening to the Comixology app?

On December 4, 2023, we will be merging the Comixology and Kindle applications on iOS, Android, and Fire OS, and the Comixology app will no longer be available for use.

Where will I read comics?

After December 4, 2023, you can continue to access your Comixology comics, graphic novels, and manga titles in the Kindle app. Please ensure you are using the same Amazon login you use now for the Comixology app.

You may also continue to read your Comixology books on the web via read.amazon.com. If you prefer to read on your Kindle E-reader, you can go to Your Content and Devices to send individual books to download on your E-reader. Mac users can also read via the recently upgraded Kindle for Mac.

Where can I download the Kindle app?

The Kindle app is available on iOSAndroid, and pre-installed on Fire tablets.

Do I need to download my books again on my phone or tablet?

Yes, you must download your books again in the Kindle app in order to continue reading. When you are ready to make the switch, make sure to delete the Comixology app to free up storage space on your device.

What happens if I’m in the middle of a book?

Your reading progress automatically syncs across both the Kindle and Comixology apps, so you can pick up right where you left off.

Will I lose access to any books I currently own or borrowed?

No, all books that are available in the Comixology app are also available in the Kindle app. If you appear to be missing a book, please try the following:
1. When logging into the Kindle app for the very first time, please allow a few minutes for your full library to be synced to your device. This process can take longer for customers with very large libraries.
2. If your initial library sync appears to get stuck, select ‘More’ from the bottom navigation and tap ‘Sync’ to initiate a new library sync request.
3. Any books that you may have previously chosen to hide in your Comixology library can be accessed by tapping the filter menu and selecting ‘Hidden’ within the Kindle app. From here you can unhide titles if you’d like.
4. Please ensure that you are using the same Amazon login for both the Comixology and Kindle apps.
If none of the above solutions work, please contact Customer Service for support:
1. Go to https://www.amazon.com/contact-us/
2. Go to ‘Help with Something Else’ and select ‘eBooks, Prime Videos, Music, or Games’.
3. Then click ‘Kindle eBooks/Digital Content/Comics’ and select the subcategory best related to your question.

I have too many comics in my Kindle library, how will I find anything?

Choosing the ‘Comics & Manga’ filter will adjust your library to either only show comics, graphic novels and manga. Alternatively, you can choose the ‘Books’ filter if you want to want to view your library without comics, graphic novels and manga titles. Additionally, you can continue to hide individual comics, graphic novels, and manga by long-pressing a title and selecting ‘Hide Book’. Hidden books can then be accessed via tapping the library filter menu and selecting ‘Hidden’.

Where will I buy comics?

You may continue to purchase comics on amazon.com/comixology. Additionally, Comixology Unlimited, Kindle Unlimited, and Amazon Prime members can discover new titles to borrow directly in-app:
1. Tap the ‘Home’ button from the bottom nav,
2. Tap the ‘Explore’ button in the top left directly under the search bar, then select the ‘Comics, Manga, and Graphic Novels’ button listed under the ‘More categories’ label.

What will happen to my Comixology Unlimited subscription?

You may continue to use your Comixology Unlimited subscription in the Kindle app, including borrowing over 45,000 comics, graphic novels, and manga titles from top publishers such as Marvel, DC, Kodansha, and hundreds of Comixology Originals titles exclusively available in digital on Amazon.

What happens if I don’t switch over before the end date?

After December 4, 2023, reading will no longer be supported via the Comixology app, and you will need to download the Kindle app in order to continue to access your content.
