Launching this week is a new Star Wars: Visions series of one-shot tales exploring alternate realities in the Star Wars universe. Similar to the animated series, some of comics’ best creators are taking a shot at telling their own kind of Star Wars tale. First up is Peach Momoko, delivering a tale of cultism and Sith in a time post-Emperor.
Star Wars: Visions – Peach Momoko #1 is a beautifully rendered book with no captions or dialogue. Momoko has crafted a world that’s familiar to Star Wars but also new in many different ways. I highly recommend reading the pre-story summary as it helps explain the four main characters and the state of the universe. One could see this story translating to animation well, with sound effects adding to its characters’ body horror and emotion.
The story opens with a cult known as Ankok that has risen, and it appears their leader has some kind of connection to the Sith. Their connection allows them to regurgitate fleshy growths and force themselves into their followers’ mouths. It’s unclear what this does, but one might guess it’s to control the people. Without any captions or dialogue, you’ll find you’re trying to figure out what is being relayed, with it mostly being quite clear.
That’s aided by the super fun and animated shop vendor Popo. Popo’s a bit of a surrogate for the reader, which grounds things a bit while crazy Sith shenanigans take place. Meanwhile, Kako and her trusty android Gel spend a portion of this issue scoping out the Sith cult.
This isn’t the first time Momoko has brought a body horror edge to Star Wars. She did it with the Darth Vader: Black, White, and Red series to much success. It’s tales like this that prove the property could easily go the horror route, but the kid-friendly series may not be up for it. Unless of course, comics like this sell well. The mystical horror elements work splendidly here from a base level.
I can’t say I understood exactly what happened in the end, but it looked incredible every step of the way. Without words, character motivation is a bit basic, and what the villains are up to is simplistic. Still, the visuals send your imagination running as you try to fathom how an evil like this sprouted up. The sci-fi weirdness is strong with this one, creating a sense that when a Sith is destroyed, maybe that evil leaks out elsewhere.
Star Wars: Visions – Peach Momoko #1 is an interesting visual story playing around with the idea of the Sith as a David Cronenberg body horror nightmare. I was left with many questions, but it’s undoubtedly a new horror take on Star Wars that’s captivating.
