Listen to the latest episode of our weekly comics podcast!

As a whole, Titans: Beast World is a whirlwind of an issue. Its debut issue set up the Titans with their first global catastrophe, and in this issue, we see how they rally in the face of adversity. Additionally, this story offers insight into what dangers lurk in the shadows, and those dangers seem to be closing in on the Titans. Furthermore, Titans: Beast World #2 is another spectacular issue in an interesting event.

#2: X-Men: Red #18

Fantastic Five: The best comics of the week of December 13, 2023

X-Men: Red #18 is a fond farewell to one of our favorite X-Men books in the last couple of years. It’s packed with action and heart, capping off this Arakki epic while still leaving so much room to explore on the red planet. Hopefully, their rest is restorative but also quick because Storm and her fellow Arakki are some of the biggest assets to the fight for mutantkind as the Fall of X shifts to Fall of the House of X/Rise of the Powers of X. The people of Arakko do not fear a life that ends, and there is no fear in how this book ends either: only hope.

#1: From the World of Minor Threats: The Alternates #4

Fantastic Five: The best comics of the week of December 13, 2023

No matter what this story did to the superhero canon, one thing proves immutable: there’s always room for a second chapter/story. And that’s true of The Alternates, as enough fresh road was teased that we could see even more from this “improved” iteration of the squad. While I’d readily and greedily consume a new series down the road, a big part of me is hoping this is the end for The Alternates. I don’t know how they’ll respond to this “new” world, and if they can keep marching along with each other’s support. And not knowing seems sort of like the point — you just have to keep moving to figure anything out at all. It’s just one lesson and gem that this book’s offered, and I feel irrevocably changed for having experienced this proper rush to the head and heart.

Final Thought: A poignant, trippy ending for this compelling dissection of superhero comics.
