Spinning out of the Spider-Verse and out this week, Taigami brings Kid Venom into focus with an origin miniseries. First introduced earlier this year in the Death of the Venomverse series, Kid Venom: Origins mixes Japanese Oni with a different kind of Symbiote called a Clinter. Set in 977, Kid Venom aims to protect people from evil in a younger reader manga fan series.
Manga fans will enjoy this issue, not only because the general look will be familiar but also because the main character is a wide-eyed younger character who loves being a hero. Set in an alternate universe, Taigami can explore this world’s unique rules involving Symbiotes while developing a much more positive hero than your conventional Symbiote hero.
Similar to many popular manga, strict rules are revealed in this issue. That goes for how Kid Venom can gain new powers and how his Symbiote operates. There’s a lot of potential to explore further its abilities and the enemies it will face.

There’s also great potential because this first issue is two scenes—a fight scene with an Oni and then what happens right after. A main villain is teased, but not enough is conveyed to know what his deal is or where that is going. Because it’s only two scenes, this is a faster read and over before you know it. Because of that, one can see the potential for this to read even better in trade.
Taigami’s is dynamic and explorative in its use of white space, angles, and effects. A super close-up of Kid Venom spitting out blood adds an extra bit of drama before he spits out the victim of an Oni, for instance. A double-page layout showing off Kid Venom’s ability to transform helps convey the epic nature of his abilities. There’s also a keen sense of lighting to add dramatic effect through colors by GURU-eFX. A heightened sense of energy is persistent in the fight, not unlike something you’d see in a popular anime.
Kid Venom: Origins is a strong start that younger readers will love. Its main character is excited to have his abilities, and it’s exciting to see how this version of Venom differs from the rest. It’s a quicker read, though, and may be best read when collected, but there’s no doubt this is one of the strongest new Venom variants yet.
