Cable is a complicated hero given all his time hopping and the fact that a “Kid Cable” has been running around for a few years. Is there a better writer than Fabian Nicieza to tackle a new miniseries springing from the Fall of X? I’d argue not, especially after reading the first issue out this week.
Cable’s new series is all about the threat of The Neocracy, as revealed in the preview. Sure, Orchis is bad, but as we come to learn on an excellent page, The Neocracy is even worse. Cable’s mission is to stop it before it even starts, and to do so, he needs the help of his younger self, who is currently living on the same timeline.
Nicieza writes a strong Cable, mostly through captions in the earlier part of the issue. He’s like a Terminator in that he’s a man on a mission and doesn’t crack wise for the hell of it. There’s plenty of action, like a battle with a Stark Sentinel and some nice nods to a time when his pouches were chock-full of weaponry. There are also nods to previous stories on top of the weaponry references that longtime fans will appreciate.
The explanation of this gun is pretty cool.

It’s also intriguing to see the story veer away from Orchis. It fits within the Fall of X line, especially with the confrontation at the start, but it’s also self-contained enough so casual fans can pick this up. On the reverse side, if you’re following all of the Fall of X line, you could pass on this since it’s not directly tied into the battle against Orchis. Since time travel is a big part of this tale, and not Orchis, the stakes don’t seem all that high. We have to take Cable’s word for it that this threat is huge, rather than believe it through visuals or clever ideas.
The Neocracy is also a pretty solid villain. Scot Eaton pencils the issue; the one-page explanation of who they are is quite good. They’re like energy crackles, but wait until you see the threat. The sci-fi nature of the story comes through loud and clear when it comes to Cable’s tech or the villain he’s focused on.
Cable #1 is a reminder that this hero isn’t just a guy with incredible powers, but also a weapon. From his determination to his skills in any fight, Cable proves why he’s one of the best mutants ever created.
