Out this week is Marvel-Verse: Miles Morales: Spider-Man, not to be confused with last week’s Marvel-Verse: Spider-Man & Madame Web or the 2020 release of Marvel-Verse: Amazing Spider-Man. In this five-issue collection, fans can get an excellent look at Miles’ origins, from a kid with no powers to a kid with powers and a suit to a teenager living in an entirely different universe. He’s had quite an origin, which is detailed here.
Collected here are Ultimate Comics Spider-Man #1-2, #5, and Spider-Man #1-2. All issues are written by Brian Michael Bendis, with art by Sara Pichelli. Much like previous Marvel-Verse collections (see Madame Web, Kang, Spider-Gwen, Amazing Spider-Man, Ms. Marvel, Jane Foster Thor, America, Moon Knight, Moon Girl, Morbius, Thor, Spider-Man, Hawkeye, Doctor Strange, Shang-Chi, Captain Marvel, Deadpool & Wolverine, Iron Man, Venom, Thanos, Guardians of the Galaxy, Rocket and Groot, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Black Panther) this is a gateway for fans of the MCU films who want to dip into the comics.
Kicking things off is the origin of Miles Morales and his acquiring superpowers and figuring out what they are. That includes invisibility, a “Venom Blast,” and strength. It’s not until Ultimate Comics Spider-Man #2 that he realizes he can stick to things and is a bonafide Spider-Man.
Then in the fifth issue, Miles is pressured by Nick Fury and other heroes to explain who he is and why he’s wearing Spider-Man’s costume. After proving he’s got the stuff to be a hero and using it responsibly, he gets the iconic black and red suit.
Closing things out is Spider-Man #1-2, which helps define Miles after jumping over to the 616 universe for good. He faces a hugely powerful villain in Blackheart and meets the 616 Spider-Man. At the time, this story was hugely impactful as it was pretty new to see Miles interact with Spider-Man, especially the 616 version.
As with most Marvel-Verse collections, this reading experience is thin but just good enough to brush up on the basics. You’re better off just reading the entire run, but if you had to cram for a pop quiz on Miles Morales, this is a great resource.
