Rob Liefeld has called it quits on Deadpool, at least in the soon-to-be future. The creator took to Twitter and let it be known he’ll no longer be drawing or writing the character after wrapping up one final tale. He said that the story has started and will be released in the summer of 2024.
This news comes as a surprise, especially since Liefeld has been on a tear drawing Deadpool at Marvel Comics in the last few years, particularly with variant covers as well as the sequel series Deadpool: Badder Blood.
So why retire from a character he’s been so closely tied to and one that he co-created? As Liefeld put it:
That’s easy, I’ll be 57 at the end of this and my eyes are still functioning, the work continues to be strong, I want to go out with the best effort I can muster. The hand-eye coordination won’t be there forever. I’ll elaborate more on this on my next Robservations podcast and look forward to taking this journey with you, the world’s greatest fans, who have always provided the best support a cartoonist could ever imagine. And that, is saying something!
