Whenever Emerald City Comic Con announces its guests, visitors tend to coordinate their cosplay based on the role that guests have had in pop culture. In 2022, the announcement of Christopher Eccleston brought a flood of Doctor Who cosplayers. 2019 brought the cast of Stranger Things, and a fleet of fans decked out in Scoops Ahoy uniforms or Demogorgon heads. This year, the guest of honor was Chris Evans – meaning that there were plenty of Captain America costumes at the con and on the main stage where Evans had his spotlight panel.
It also happens to be the 10th anniversary of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, which Evans considers as one of the “high points” of his tenure as Steve Rogers. “When I did the first Captain America movie there was a learning curve, I kind of had to prove myself,” Evans said. “Here I was more confident. I got to dig into the character.” Part of that he credits to directors Joe and Anthony Russo; when discussing his role as the sadistic Lloyd Hansen in the Russos’ spy thriller The Gray Man, Evans said he admired their love of movies and how they held deep conversations with him about his character.
Though he’s hung up the Sentinel of Liberty’s shield, Evans did make a return to one of his other major comic book roles last year with Scott Pilgrim Takes Off as action star Lucas Lee. When reflecting on how Michael Cera reactivated the old email that the Scott Pilgrim cast was a part of, Evans had nothing but praise for his co-star, saying “Michael has a unique sense of humor.” He also said that the cast still emails each other, saying that it was great to reconnect.
Next up was Knives Out, which Evans loved from the minute he received the script. “I told my agent, ‘Get me in this movie!'” After asking the audience if they’d seen the whole movie – “It was me. I did it.” – he said that his last day of filming also happened to be the big reveal that his playboy character Ransom was the guilty party.
Evans finally talked about his upcoming Christmas film Red One, an action comedy featuring him and Dwayne Johnson. “I’d never done a Christmas film…you can do twenty action films, you can do ten comedies, but only one Christmas film. And you’d think I’d be Christmased out, but I want to do more!” He then revealed that he’d love to star in a fantasy film. “I’m a big fan of fantasy films. I love Lord of the Rings. I love The Neverending Story…Honestly, they’re my favorite type of films, but they’re also big giant movies that are also tough to do well, so a lot of different ingredients have to come together correctly.”
Funnily enough, Evans received a blessing of sorts from Lord of the Rings alums Elijah Wood and Sean Astin, whose spotlight panel took place after his. “I bless the concept,” Astin said, jokingly referring to himself as the “gatekeeper”. Personally, I’d love to see Evans in a fantasy film as well; hopefully a Dungeons and Dragons sequel that pits him against Chris Evans. I can dream.
