#5: Ultimate X-Men #1

Fantastic Five: The best comics of the week of March 6, 2024

Listen to the latest episode of our weekly comics podcast!

Fans are in for a truly unique treat with Ultimate X-Men as it feels right at home with its teen main character introducing us to mutants in a brand new way. It doesn’t feel like X-Men per se, but it captures the weirdness of super-powered enemies and the isolation of being a teenager all alone. There may not be a team yet, but it’s a compelling story of a young girl discovering she has powers at an age when outside armor is more needed than ever.

#3: Blue Beetle #7

Fantastic Five: The best comics of the week of March 6, 2024

The current Blue Beetle creative team found a perfect way to honor Giffen by taking Jaime on a whirlwind tour of the DC Universe, past to future. Giving chances for other creators to come in and celebrate the late writer by visiting some touchstones one more time, but instead of giving into grief, this was a fun issue that reminds you of the joy of comics and character’s impact. It’s a perfect comic for fans to return to and a wonderful treat for the next generation to discover DC’s history and Giffen’s fingerprint on it.

Funny, weird, and fulfilling, this issue showcases a perfectly campy yet surprisingly touching tale that serves as a very appropriate way to pass the torch to the new creative team.

#1: The Bat-Man: First Knight #1

Fantastic Five: The best comics of the week of March 6, 2024

From start to finish, The Bat-Man: First Knight #1 is a captivating read. This issue succeeds in delivering an uncommon concept: a Batman origin that takes place in 1939, and finds its strength in the setting. Forcing Bat-Man into a world with limited resources and a lack of supporters humanizes him while making his mission all the more compelling. The social contract to the impending War similarly parallels the citizens of Gotham to those in Europe. Altogether, this is a very intriguing first issue which ends on a shocking cliffhanger to leave readers waiting for the next part of this three-issue miniseries.
