This week’s Channel Surfing TV picks include a revival and a pair of adaptations. A beloved children’s animated series returns over 25 years later in X-Men ’97. Mingle amongst Florida high society in Palm Royale. Then, humanity faces a grave threat in 3 Body Problem.

The X-traordinary

X-Men: The Animated Series is an influential animated show that helped spur many people’s interest into comics. It aired for five seasons, and ended with Professor Xavier, the leader of the titular group, heading into space to receive a cure for a fatal condition while his team remains behind on Earth.

X-Men ’97 picks up right after the original with the remaining X-Men using their gifts for good even though much of society despises them. There are a lot of growing pains since they don’t have the guidance of their previous leader. The first season is comprised of 10 episodes and stars Ray Chase as Cyclops, Jennifer Hale as Jean Grey, Alison Sealy-Smith as Storm, Cal Dodd as Wolverine, JP Karliak as Morph, Lenore Zann as Rogue, George Buza as Beast, AJ LoCascio as Gambit, Holly Chou as Jubilee, Isaac Robinson-Smith as Bishop, Matthew Waterson as Magneto, and Adrian Hough as Nightcrawler.

The first two episodes of X-Men ’97 stream beginning Wednesday, March 20, on Disney+.

The Price of Membership

Palm Royale is an adaptation of the novel Mr. And Mrs. American Pie. It follows a woman named Maxine Simmons who longs to rub elbows with and become part of Palm Beach high society. The key to making her dreams come true is membership to the titular club. The series is a period piece taking place in 1969, and it explores how far you’re willing to go to get what others have. The show stars Kristen Wiig, Ricky Martin, Josh Lucas, Leslie Bibb, Laura Dern, Alison Janney, and Carol Burnett.

The first three episodes of Palm Royale drop Wednesday, March 20, on Apple TV+.

The World Is Unraveling

3 Body Problem is a new science fiction series based off of the story The Three-Body Problem from writer Liu Cixin. The adaptation comes from the creators of Game of Thrones, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, and writer Alexander Woo.

The story is about an astrophysicist named Ye Wenjie who is labelled a traitor during the Chinese Cultural Revolution. Instead of a life in prison, the military stations her at a remote base to take advantage of her scientific knowledge. While there, Wenjie makes a critical decision that sends reverberations throughout time and space unleashing a great threat on Earth.

Watch the entire first season of 3 Body Problem starting Thursday, March 21, on Netflix.
