‘Justice Society of America’ #9 review

As the JSA investigates Huntress’ claims, they face a lawless generation and the Legionnaire.

Geoff Johns, Mikel Janin, and Jordie Bellaire team up with the Justice Society of America to check on Huntress’ claims about the team’s future. Things are getting tighter for the Society as the team is splitting its members to deal with the Lost Children, and some are tracking down the future members of the potential Huntress team. It is compelling as the story deals with the future of the Society since fans wonder about this series’s future after this arc. But before we get to the end, what is happening in the now?

Listen to the latest episode of our weekly comics podcast!

Our preview shows some of the best moments in this issue, as you get to see the Lost Children integrate with the DC Universe, but I would love to see more of a follow-up with John Henry Jr. and Steel since they are family. Another great gift Geoff Johns gives us is the idea of a new mission for Mister Terrific, Michael Holt. Quiz Kid’s improvement to the T-Sphere and making it a Q-Sphere could lead to an exciting spin-off mini-series for the two, giving fans hope for more adventures with this set of characters. The idea of more mini-series would be fantastic in hopes of keeping the New Golden Age alive after Johns and company go to work on Ghost Machine and allow for other talents to shepherd these characters.

Those little glimpses have so much potential to explore more of the DCU and its grand legacies, plus it would give more spotlight time for the characters. Most of the issue dedicates itself to new characters like Harlequin’s Son and the Legionnaire. Jordie Bellaire’s darker tones add to the issue’s vibe of retribution. In past issues, we have seen Harlequin’s Son go after abusive people and brand them. In this issue, we know what happens with a repeat offender as some of the JSA show up to offer the Son a chance at redemption. I do like the team that Geoff Johns sent: Hawkman, Power Girl, Star Girl, and Salem, as most of them would deal out some harsh justice, too, and Johns reminds the reader of that fact.

Mikel Janin gets to play with new chemistry as the characters, old and new, interact. Janin shows us how Harlequin’s Son uses his illusion powers; while the sights do not enthrall Salem, she can still engage in battle. Things end quickly as the Legionnaire arrives and halts the struggle. This story beat is perfect as it allows the JSA to round up Harlequin’s Son and return home, getting most of the team together as they investigate the Legionnaire. Some fun moments are when they return, Power Girl tells Alan Scott we have another problem, and his response is, “This can’t be a coincidence.” Luckily, the Legionnaire’s arrival is perfect timing with Huntress’ ideal of villain redemption within the JSA as Johns ties things together by revealing the identity of the Legionnaire. Hopefully, the next issue will be time to continue with this shocking revelation and momentum.

This issue keeps the JSA on their toes as they help round up Huntress’ recruits to help them find redemption while helping Star Girl’s Lost Children integrate into the greater DCU. Johns, Janin, and Bellaire round up the entertainment as they keep fans intrigued by revealing who the Legionnaire is and how that identity will impact the now, future, and the Society.

The creative team delivers with their talents and Jordie Bellaire takes things up a notch with her colors as it brings the mood of the issue to the front
The identity of the Legionnaire is intriguing and I can't wait to see the full impact on the JSA
With so much happening bigger moments get cut short in order to move on and the teases open doors that might not get explored
