I am becoming more and more convinced that the changing credits of each episode are more important than I initially thought. While they continue to impress, “Motendo/Lifedeath Pt 1” uses this feature to foreshadow the events of the current episode while also hinting at future developments. It’s a subtle yet effective technique that adds depth to the viewing experience, keeping audiences engaged and eager to unravel the mysteries of the mutant universe. This week’s credits showcasing both Mojo and Forge, with both characters being essential elements to this episode.

Splitting the episode into two parts, with the second part drawing inspiration from the comic book storyline, “Lifedeath,” adds an extra layer of depth and complexity to the narrative. By seamlessly weaving together elements from the source material with original storytelling, the creators strike a perfect balance that honors the legacy of the X-Men comics while also pushing the boundaries of the animated series.

One of the standout features of “Motendo/Lifedeath Pt 1” is the incorporation of the video game aspect into the storyline. The concept of “Motendo” adds a fun and unique twist to the episode, allowing the characters to navigate a virtual world filled with challenges and obstacles. This addition is executed expertly, injecting a sense of excitement and adventure into the episode while also providing a fresh perspective on the mutant experience. This is just another excellent showcase on just how far animation has come since the original series aired 30 years ago.

The evolving relationship between Jubilee and Roberto De Costa takes center stage in this episode, showcasing the depth and complexity of their connection. As their bond continues to develop and evolve, viewers are treated to moments of genuine emotion and vulnerability, adding a layer of authenticity to their dynamic. Roberto’s character remains a pleasant addition to the series, with his internal struggles and feelings towards being a mutant being explored with nuance and depth.

Furthermore, “Motendo/Lifedeath Pt 1” highlights Jubilee’s evolution as a mutant, showcasing the growth and development of her powers in exciting new ways. From her mastery of light-based abilities to her increased confidence in the face of danger, Jubilee emerges as a formidable force to be reckoned with, solidifying her status as a fan-favorite character in the X-Men universe.

X-Men '97 episode 4 "Motendo/Lifedeath Pt 1" review

The theme of being afraid of growing up is explored with sensitivity and depth in this episode, adding an emotional resonance that resonates with viewers of all ages. Through the struggles and challenges faced by the characters, audiences are reminded of the universal experience of grappling with change and uncertainty, making the storyline feel relatable and impactful.

However, not all aspects of the episode are without flaws. The rushed nature of the relationship between Forge and Storm feels somewhat forced, detracting from the overall cohesiveness of the narrative. While their dynamic adds an interesting subplot to the episode, it ultimately feels underdeveloped and lacking in emotional depth.

On a more positive note, the introduction of a new enemy, the Advisory, adds an exciting new element to the standard X-Men rogues’ gallery. With their mysterious motives and formidable powers, the Adversary poses a significant threat to our heroes, setting the stage for epic confrontations and thrilling battles to come.
