As we get closer to the end of the Krakoan era Wolverine, with Hellverine around the corner, it’s nice to know this ten-part finale is a well-oiled machine. Benjamin Percy and Victo LaValle are putting on a clinic as they set up a bonafide war while leaning into the pure evil that is Sabretooth. Multiple moving parts are keeping the stakes and tension up, and Laura Kinney fans have plenty of red meat to dig into with Wolverine #47.
In Part 7, Wolverine #47 opens on Laura Kinney, where we last saw her: About to break out of a Sabretooth cell. Sabretooths (Sabreteeth?) surround her from across the multiverse, but you best know she’s not outmatched in the slightest. Using her quick wits and extreme violence, we see she can hold on to her own while she attempts to escape and help Logan.
And Logan needs a lot of help. In the last issue, Wolverine was shot with a gun that took away his healing factor. Now Sabretooth is going in for the kill. Other factors are in play surrounding Wolverine and Sabretooth, such as the Exiles losing close friends–like Toad–and wanting to kill them both at this point. There’s also Kid Omega, now reduced to a head in a box being controlled by Sabretooth. With all these moving parts, the creative team has the gall to introduce another player into this growing war.
Fans of gore will have plenty to peep in this issue. Laura does most of the hacking and slashing with disembodied heads and blood geysers all over the place. Wolverine takes some gnarly blows, and Alex Sinclair makes that blood look gruesome as it flows. Pencils by Geoff Shaw are great with high detail and plenty of dynamic range in the fights. One of the coolest panels features an organic trap that’s all teeth and roots. The new villainous player in this battle is also pretty cool with a techno-cybernetic thing going on. He looks futuristic and badass.
As a multi-part story, the cliffhanger does leave you wanting. There’s a bit of a bait and switch involving a death you thought happened, and Laura is faced with a villain without a clue given to the reader to know how things will play out. If you read solicitations, you already know what Wolverine is up to, but it’s a bit of a limp way to end the final panel. As with many longer stories, this one might be best in trade.
Wolverine #47 leans into Laura Kinney as a total badass in a table-setting sort of issue. The “Sabretooth War” story arc is gearing up for its final push towards the climax, and it continues to amaze me how it juggles so much so well.
