Marvel sheds light on ‘Phoenix’ #1 out July 17th

Check out all the covers for the debut issue of Stephanie Phillips and Alessandro Miracolo’s ‘PHOENIX,’ on sale July 17.

Marvel Comics has revealed new details surrounding Stephanie Phillips and Alessandro Miracolo’s Phoenix, which launches this July.

Announced in April, Phillips teased with CBR, “Thematically, I’m interested in exploring the interplay between human and cosmic forces that is happening within Jean. Some in the cosmic universe know her as Jean Grey, and some fear her as the Phoenix. I want us to explore how that will impact her mission as a hero in the stars. The book also looks at the hierarchy of the cosmos and where Jean fits into the hierarchy. There are some incredibly powerful entities out in space… what will they think of Jean’s presence as the Phoenix?”

So what’s Phoenix about?

She is Jean Grey. She is Phoenix. She saves the world. She brings death. One woman, alone in space, who not only must do what no one else can: she yearns to. A desperate S.O.S. from Nova brings the Phoenix to the edge of a black hole, where hundreds of lives hang in the balance…and whatever Jean does – or fails to do – will bring darkness to the universe and haunt her in ways she can scarcely imagine…

New York, NY— May 31, 2024 — In the X-Men’s upcoming From the Ashes era, Jean Grey takes to the stars to fulfill her divine destiny in PHOENIX, a new ongoing series by writer Stephanie Phillips and artist Alessandro Miracolo. Today, fans can see all the covers that will grace the highly anticipated debut issue, hitting stands on July 17.

Earlier this week in Rise of the Powers of X #5, one of the final issues of the X-Men’s Krakoan Age, Jean Grey was dramatically reborn as the Phoenix and promptly saved all of existence from an all-consuming AI Dominion. It was a battle outside of time and space that will go down in Marvel Comics history, and only a taste of the awe-inspiring feats that Jean will continue to achieve in her new solo series. Reigniting suns, suppressing black holes, taking on the likes of Gorr the God Butcher and Thanos’ Black Order singlehandedly, and teaming up with fellow space-faring heroes like Nova, Corsair, and Captain Marvel—Jean is no longer the Earth-bound X-Man you knew; she’s the Phoenix, now and forever! Glorious adventures await, but while the galaxies beckon Jean for salvation, will they also be reminded of her appetite for destruction?

PHOENIX #1’s variant covers include breathtaking pieces of Jean by industry superstars like Rose Besch, Greg Land, Aka, and Peach Momoko. And like many of Marvel’s major launches, PHOENIX #1 will have a fiery Foil Variant Cover—drawn by the legendary Joe Quesada.

In an interview with CBR, who also shared an exclusive first look, Phillips teased, “Thematically, I’m interested in exploring the interplay between human and cosmic forces that is happening within Jean.
