‘Wolverine: Blood Hunt’ #1 is good action comics

Wolverine versus a vampire army, who ya got?!

When it comes to vampires and Wolverine fighting, everyone wins. What could be better than an unkillable man versus bloodsuckers who see him as their greatest nemesis? Writer Tom Waltz and artist Juan José Ryp tackle that question in an action-packed first issue that sets the stage for a team-up and a surprise villain behind it all.

As far as fight comics go, this issue has everything, from Wolverine fighting vampires in a bar to a casino and in the streets. Wolverine: Blood Hunt #1 opens with Wolverine waiting for a friend in a bar, only to be attacked by military men who have been turned. Juan José Ryp’s art only improves with highly detailed scenes and well-rendered slashing, gore, and the like.

Throughout the issue, Waltz and Ryp make it clear that Wolverine may be unkillable, but he still feels every bit of pain coming his way. Captions draw you into that pain, detailing the feel of the bullets like a heat ray. My favorite bit was when Wolverine described bullets as “red-hot hornet stings everywhere.”

After an extended fight scene and a save by Louise (Nightguard), the story slows down as Logan explains how he got there. It gets a little too heavy on exposition, but they’re both out killing a different set of vampires. It’s cool to see Louise back, as she’s a recent creation and unique regarding this vampire uprising. By the end, Waltz will capture your interest with a major villain that has set their sites on Wolverine.

Ryp’s art sells the book and will be the biggest draw for fans. No offense to Waltz, but the plotting is a bit by-the-numbers. There are little details in explosions and battle damage, not unlike Geoff Darrow’s, where you’ll linger just a bit longer to take it all in.

As far as the larger story, the use of Louise is an interesting wrinkle as well as whatever plan the vampires have for Wolverine. Regardless of how impossible it probably is to turn Wolverine into a vampire, there will be, at the very least, a pile of vampire bodies by the end when all is said and done.

Wolverine: Blood Hunt #1 is a good fight comic with plenty of slashing from Logan paired well with captions that remind us he feels every bit of pain along the way.
