X-Men Monday #261 – Tim Seeley Talks ‘Venom War: Wolverine’

Plus, an eXclusive look at ‘Venom War: Wolverine’ #1!

Welcome, X-Fans, to another uncanny edition of X-Men Monday at AIPT!

Not sure if you’ve heard, X-Fans, but we’re in the midst of a Venom War. I hope you stocked up on supplies.

I kid — of course you X-Fans know about Venom War. Former X-Men Senior Editor (and current Venom Editor) Jordan D. White told you all about it in the one-and-only edition of Venom Monday! Anyway, it’s hard to have a Venom War and not get some of that wacky space goop on one of Marvel’s mutants. And wouldn’t you know it — it got on the one mutant who also happens to be breaking box office records: Wolverine!

Venom War: Wolverine #1, on sale September 11, 2024, teams Local Man creators Tim Seeley and Tony Fleecs with artist Kev Walker for a three-issue mini-series that pits Logan against a mindless Zombiote with a taste for flesh. Read on to learn a bit more about what you can expect from this Venom War tie-in via this quick check-in with Tim.

AIPT: Welcome back to X-Men Monday, Tim! Before we sink our claws into Venom War: Wolverine, as this is an X-Men column, could you share your first X-Men eXperience?

Tim Seeley: When I was 5, my mom got me a pack of Marvel stickers because it had Spidey and Hulk on it. It also had Wolverine and Colossus, but they were just called “X-MEN.” I was so confused. Are they both named “X-MEN?!” HOW CAN THIS BE!? So I went to the grocery store and found an issue of Classic X-Men. It was issue 4. I was in love!

AIPT: How did the opportunity to write a Venom War tie-in mini-series starring Wolverine come about?

Tim: Jordan D. White and I have worked together a lot, but I think he liked our Local Man book, so he asked Tony and me to do it together!

AIPT: For readers just hearing about Venom War: Wolverine for the first time, what’s your elevator pitch for the mini-series?

Tim: It’s a small town noir/horror occurring in the middle of a monster war.

AIPT: Wolverine is a very versatile character who has appeared in a lot of comics (and other media) over the past 50 years. As writers, does that make it challenging to tell new Wolverine stories that will excite and engage readers?

Tim: It does. We really tried to lean into a “tone” we hadn’t seen for Wolverine before. Something small, tense, and scary instead of the usual big and bombastic.

AIPT: What can you tell us about Wolverine’s symbiote?

Tim: It’s very dead, very mean, and it wants to spread.

AIPT: Artist Kev Walker’s illustrating Venom War: Wolverine — what can readers expect from the series’ visuals?

Tim: Kev’s current style is different than what I’d seen before and it ends up working really well for our simmering, character-based story!

AIPT: Based on Local Man, you and Tony have your collaborative process down pat. But I was wondering if you could share a bit about how you two craft a story like Venom War: Wolverine.

Tim: Our usual method is that we get on the phone or in Tony’s garage and talk a story out. Tony tends to be very scene-based, while I’m pretty good at connective tissue. Then, one of us writes a script, the other re-writes, and somewhere in the middle we have something new!

AIPT: Finally, Wolverine fears the symbiote bringing out his worst impulses. Let’s say you found yourself bonded to a symbiote — what would Timbiote fear the most?

Tim: Oh, I would absolutely be Venomized to eat the entire dessert counter at the coffee shop. And then, I’d surely go fully evil and binge a bunch of ’80s B-horror flicks despite my poor family’s protests.

AIPT: I mean… if I’m being honest, none of that sounds too bad. But on that note, thanks for stopping by X-Men Monday, Tim!

Remember, X-Fans, Venom War: Wolverine #1 goes on sale September 11, 2024. Here’s an eXclusive look at four of Kev Walker’s pages featuring Logan and his new friend, courtesy of our friends at Marvel.
