‘Absolute Power: Task Force VII’ #4 is a worthy tie-in

This issue works because of its strong cast and the utter horror of Failsafe as a threat.

Absolute Power is raging on, and the heroes’ backs are to the wall. To capture the bigger picture of the event, Absolute Power: Task Force VII has revealed different corners of the fight going on across the DC Universe. Out this week is Absolute Power: Task Force VII #4, which focuses on an attack by Failsafe. You know, the third part of the Trinity of Evil!

Written by Pornsak Pichetshote, this is a strong one-shot battle pitting Nightwing and his team up against Failsafe. They’re held out in a Court of Owls location, but Failsafe has found them. The issue works wonders, thanks to the character writing and captions. After reading this, you’ll want a team of Tim Drake, Nightwing, The Ray, Miss Martian, and Voodoo.

That’s largely due to the character writing, as each has a distinct personality. Pichetshote zeroes in on Miss Martian and The Ray, and by the end, you’ll agree they’re heroes even without powers. Failsafe is juxtaposed with their heart and heroism, who have no empathy. He’s willing to do whatever it takes to win, and the creative team shows that in dramatic fashion.

Good team dynamics.

Claire Roe draws a great issue with a nice subdued color palette by Lee Loughridge. A team book like this needs good fight scenes, and Roe doesn’t disappoint. That goes for Failsafe, who has a creepy elongated finger move that makes it far more alien than Miss Martian. The battle damage he suffers is also quite cool to look at.

Another key element of this issue is some plot progression regarding Waller’s plans. It involves supervillains, and it’s a pretty big reveal — so big you won’t want to miss it to know what’s going on in the larger picture. That’s key, as tie-in issues often fluff side projects and are not imperative to the larger story.

Absolute Power: Task Force VII #4 works because of its strong cast and the utter horror of Failsafe as a threat. As tie-ins go, this issue matters, but it also delivers a good team book and reminds us that Failsafe is a frightening villain.

Great tie-in does its own thing but adds to the larger tapestry
Roe's art is fabulous, especially the creepiness of Failsafe and the fight scene
The main action with Failsafe is less important to the main story and more of a one off
