Say what you will about corporate synergy, but it’s hard to deny that Marvel/Disney mashups are super fun. The cute first stab at mashups came through What If…? Donald Duck Became Wolverine, and this week, Donald is getting his Thor on. Told in a similar way to the classic Donald Duck comics, expect a cute one-shot romp melding two comic icons.
Marvel & Disney: What If…? Donald Duck Became Thor opens with Donald Duck wielding Mjolnir, but only for the captions to explain. They’ll take us back in the story to show us how he got the power. It all starts with Donald’s nephews on a mission to get a Woodchucks badge for exploring Viking relics. On their way to an archeological dig in Norway, the group starts digging and investigating, only for Donald to whack his foot. Walking it off, he runs into some rock aliens, and he’s found out and rushes into a cave. Donald Blake fans will enjoy this take on the character.
This is a fairly standard adventure mimicking Blake’s version of Thor right down to the wooden staff. Writer Steve Behling plots the story with Riccardo Secchi scripting, and he keeps things fairly simple, with Donald narrowly avoiding attacks, getting to soak up Thor’s powers, and eventually saving the day. Surprisingly, Donald’s temper isn’t used in this story like in the Wolverine one-shot. Instead, he’s just trying to keep his head straight.
If you’re looking for humor, Secchi throws in a running gag about rock restaurants. The Stone Ducks from Saturn sure do love eateries.
The same artist on the Wolverine tale, Giada Perissinotto, returns with his super cute and suitable style for a cartoon character like Donald Duck. He looks great like Thor, and the rock monsters also have nice designs. Readers might notice when things get dangerous the gutters turn black, which is an interesting choice.
Marvel’s got another cute one-shot on their hands with Marvel & Disney: What If…? Donald Duck Became Thor. This tale is fairly straightforward, with not a lot of character work, but its clean art style will please most everyone.
