‘Jim Henson’s Labyrinth’ #1 offers stunning visuals but a familiar story

The ‘Labyrinth’ novelization based on the movie is getting a comic adaptation. Is it good?

Labyrinth returns to comic shops this week with a brand new adaptation, but not what you might think. Adapted from A.C.H. Smith’s Jim Henson’s Labyrinth novelization, this new series aims to add the unique flavor of the novel but with all the charm and magic of Jim Henson’s original vision. For Labyrinth superfans, this is a must-read, but for casual fans of the movie who are curious about what this adds, they may want to temper expectations.

Jim Henson’s Labyrinth #1 is a good first chapter in a familiar story. It opens in the same way as the film and generally follows the same plot. Written by Kyla Vanderklugt and illustrated by Giorgio Spalletta, the story certainly doesn’t feel different — at least not yet.

If you’re looking for new content not in the original film, there’s more info about Sarah’s family situation. It’s minimal, however, and the rest of the issue follows almost exactly the film. Sarah wishes for her kid brother to be taken by goblins, and you probably know the rest.

The art is the standout element of this first issue. Spalletta’s style resembles an animated movie, with good flow, attention to detail, and a slight cartoony nature. Sarah has a lust for life, from her reciting in the park to her room, which is scattered with familiar objects. Her eyes have a Disney princess feel to them. Above all else, she feels like a lead hero about to embark on a quest.

The Goblin King looks as naughty as ever while not being a carbon copy of David Bowie. He also sounds like he should be from the film. However, the goblins in Sarah’s closet are distinctly familiar to Henson’s puppets.

If you purchase Jim Henson’s Labyrinth #1 expecting droves of brand new material, you’re going to be disappointed. Most should temper expectations, knowing the source material of A.C.H. Smith’s Jim Henson’s Labyrinth novelization is very close to the film. Instead, know the visual style is perfect for this series while new additions here and there are certain to pop up. With Jim Henson’s Labyrinth #1, more is more, with art that dazzles.
