New York Comic Con audiences were treated Thursday afternoon to a full trailer for the Max series Dune: Prophecy, premiering November 17th at the Dune: Prophecy panel.
The preview provided our best look yet at the palace intrigue happening 10,000 years before Paul Atreides and the films from Director Denis Villeneuve. “We are in the shadow of the war humankind has fought against thinking machines,” Executive Producer Alison Schapker said. “So we’re on the other side of the rise of artificial intelligence. Now we’re in the aftermath, and we’re in the time of great rebuilding. There’s a young Imperium. There are the great houses and an emperor and kind of neo-feudal society.”
“The book is the cornerstone of Sci-Fi, one of the cornerstones,” Executive Producer Jordan Goldberg said. “So any Science Fictions you’ve seen in the last few decades have been influenced by it. But this is a show, HBO Max Original, and it’s going to be appearing on HBO. And that means it’s a character-driven, thought-provoking narrative. It’s constantly surprising, always propulsive, and visually breathtaking.”
“I think there’s probably nobody in this room that hasn’t in some way been touched by the fear that is inculcated into us by religion,” says Emily Watson, who plays Valya Harkonnon. “And that’s very much the texture of the fear that we play with. You know, that’s part of our makeup.”
Schapker discussed the role power plays in this story: “To me, writing a show that’s concerned with power, and truth, and lies, and stories, and what does it mean to have charismatic leaders, and is that something to be followed or something to be suspicious of — and I think Dune raises all kinds of questions about how power operates in the light and how power operates in the shadows.”
“The sisterhood certainly has a prominent public place,” Schapker said. “And they have jobs as soothsayers, and they’re in the halls of power, and they’re teaching young girls and insinuating themselves into noble families, but they’re also pulling strings behind the scenes. And I think to witness that or to write about that certainly speaks to every time period and I think highlights some questions we all should be asking of power in any given moment like including today.”
