NYCC 2024: ‘Mayfair Witches’ casts a spell for season 2 and spinoff, ‘The Talamasca’

‘…in Talamasca there’s going to be considerable crossover,’ says Mark Johnson, setting expectations high.

This afternoon, the cast and crew of Anne Rice’s Mayfair Witches assembled at NYCC to discuss the upcoming second season ahead of its return on AMC and AMC+ early next year. Moderated by TV Guide’s Damian Holbrook, Mark Johnson, Esta Spalding, Harry Hamlin, Tongayi Chirisa, and Alyssa Jirrels took the stage to give insight into just how those southern witches are helping build the Immortal Universe. They also allowed slide the newly born Lasher will not necessarily be a force of evil but have their motivations explored.

The premiere episode of season two was screened and included “witch babies,” according to Holbrook. He continues after the screening to say, “Those demon babies grow up fast,” and I can’t argue after watching the season premiere. The theme of babies and motherhood, which was apparent even in the first season, is even more relevant with everything that is going on in the Supreme Court. Holbrook made a joke about the show using CGI to make all the versions of Lasher look like Jack Huston, but Johnson and Spalding revealed they just lucked out in casting.

On the stories being told this season, Spalding said that we would be getting “Lasher’s relationship with Suzanne [Mayfair] during the Renaissance” and Cortland’s relationship with his father, Julian. As a horror fan, I was elated that Ted Levine was cast as Julian.

Mark Johnson discussed the second spinoff in the Immortal Universe, The Talasmasca. Johnson said the show would have a very different feel than the other two shows. According to him, it was important for these shows to feel connected but have their own vibe. The Talamasca will have “a distinctive flair” compared to a spy show with the occasional witch. This is one of my favorite shared universes, mainly because it is so horror-based, which makes me excited about the upcoming spinoff.

With two seasons for as many shows behind them, the Immortal Universe is prepared for what’s coming — no matter what that could be. Viewers can catch all the New Orleans spookiness and the witch characters of Anne Rice’s Mayfair Witches on AMC and AMC+ when it arrives next year.
