The best comics of the week: October 23, 2024

#5: The Power Fantasy #3

Fantastic Five: The best comics of the week of October 23, 2024

The Power Fantasy #3 opens up the world and its history while fleshing out one of the six super-powered people. The characters’ complexities and their world are, at times, riveting while also keeping you invested in the narrative. The scope is large and the real-world nature of superheroes is profound and moving.

#4: The Moon is Following Us #2

Fantastic Five: The best comics of the week of October 23, 2024

The Moon is Following Us #2 follows up its stellar debut issue with a sophomore installment that keeps up the momentum and the emotional investment, which bodes well for future issues. I’ve felt that the second issue is the toughest of a comic, because you have to make sure readers keep coming back, but Johnson and Rossmo have more than succeeded.

#3: Zatanna: Bring Down the House #5

Fantastic Five: The best comics of the week of October 23, 2024

Zatanna: Bring Down the House #5 is a perfect conclusion to this mini-series. While it’s sad to see a wonderful book such as this end, Tamaki and Rodríguez end it on a perfect note. I mentioned before I felt this story was a perfect encapsulation of A Hero’s Journey, and it’s safe to say that was the case. As Zatanna returns to the world, we once saw her in, things are different yet the same. She’s far more comfortable with her powers and it shows. By the end, it’s clear that she’s no longer in a league of her own and has decided to move past a life of solitude. Altogether, this book wraps up various loose ends well and works fantastically to be a modern origin story for the character.

#2: Nightwing #119

Fantastic Five: The best comics of the week of October 23, 2024

Nightwing #119 everything I wanted and more. As Watters is taking advantage of the groundwork laid in the previous run, this issue is a completely different tonal direction but still manages to captivate the audience in all the right ways. In addition, the story offers a new challenge for Nightwing, as he decides which is sure to come back and haunt him down the line. This is a can’t-miss issue that makes for a perfect jumping point for readers.

#1: Absolute Wonder Woman #1

Fantastic Five: The best comics of the week of October 23, 2024

Absolute Wonder Woman #1 is a strong but simple start to an exciting new series. Sherman and Belliare’s art is at the top of their game and Thompson’s writing is the strongest its ever been. Moving forward, I can’t wait to see how the creative team introduces more familiar faces into Diana’s story and see how this version of Wonder Woman grows into this new city and world.
