Best Television of 2024: Readers’ Poll highlights the year’s best TV

Our readers’ picks for Best Television of 2024

Christmas has come and gone and that means 2025 will soon be here. What better time than now than to reflect upon the past year and recognize our favorite picks throughout all of media. For the first time, AIPT wanted to hear from readers to see what resonated with you.

We’ve already shared our Readers’ Poll results for comics, games, and movies. Now it’s time to  cover TV. There were many great options out there covering multiple genres and made available through a variety of sources from broadcast to cable to streaming. Here are our Best Television of 2024

Best Drama

Best Drama was one of two categories that had a wide field of candidates chosen by our readers. Some were big prestige television picks such as the second season of House of the Dragon and True Detective: Night Country. Other top vote getters were lesser profile, but equally as entertaining including Outer Range and The Diplomat. However, readers seemed to agree with critics selecting Shōgun. The historical series chronicling a power struggle during the beginning of the Edo period of Japan has it all. Stunning visuals, engaging narrative, and intense action.

Best Comedy

Best Comedy was the other Best Television of 2024 category that received an eclectic mix of nominations. There were animated choices with Dan Da Dan and Star Trek: Lower Decks along with rom-com Nobody Wants This. In the end, What We Do in the Shadows came out on top over the previously mentioned shows and other critical darling The Bear. The exploits of the hilarious Staten Island vampires might have ended, but we can still show our appreciation.

Best New Series

Despite winning Best Drama, Shōgun fell short in Best New Series. Other honorable mentions include The Penguin, Baby Reindeer, Fallout, and Demon’s Dededede Destruction. When it was all said and done, X-Men ’97 was the top pick. The animated revival of X-Men: The Animated Series did more than play on nostalgia. It incorporated current social issues, dark themes, and emotional and surprising developments. X-Men ’97 catered to new viewers and also matured with viewers of the original.

Best Comic Related Series

It was another Marvel series that took home the Best Comic Related Series for the Best Television of 2024. The readers have spoken and they selected Agatha All Along. They loved her and her coven’s journey on the Witches’ Road. Who could forget the time bending and moving episode centered on Patti LuPone’s Lilia. Agatha All Along faced strong competition from X-Men ’97, The Penguin, and Sweet Tooth

Best Video Game Related Series

Best Video Game Related Series was our closest category. League of Legends fans helped propel the second season of Arcane, but the animated series was runner-up. It couldn’t surpass the post-apocalyptic alternative history world of Fallout. They followed the story of a young Vault dweller who left her safe confines to find her kidnapped father. As she explores the wastelands of Los Angeles, her path becomes entwined with a “ghoulish” bounty hunter and a member of a militaristic religious cult.

Best Streaming Platform

The only category of our Best Television of 2024 to end in a tie was Best Streaming Platform. We wanted to highlight the method that seems to be the future of TV. The usual suspects received votes such as Disney+, Prime Video, and Apple TV+. But, it was OG, Netflix, and Max that reader’s recognized the most.
