If you’ve been wondering when Wonder Woman was going to get into the fight with The Sovereign, today’s your day in Wonder Woman #18. In the last few issues, Diana has taken care of her baby Trinity while the Wonder Girls are laying siege on The Sovereign’s power. Now weakened, he’s holed up in the White House, but nothing can stop Wonder Woman when she’s this determined.
Wonder Woman #18 opens at the Washington Monument. Diana is eating an apple at its base, and in the captions, we learn Superman and the Justice League rebuilt it. Diana gets up and then casually walks towards the White House. The entire issue is about Diana moving in a straight line toward The Sovereign and casually brushing off missiles, villains, and more.
Once again, The Sovereign narrates the issue via captions, and it’s presumably a conversation with Trinity sometime in the future. The captions maintain a sense of superiority, yet the visuals by Daniel Sampere show Wonder Woman can handle everything The Sovereign can throw at her.
If I had to describe this issue in one word, it would be determination. Sampere gets to draw Wonder Woman, certain she will reach her destination, and it’s epic when bombs go off behind her or she pushes through incoming machine gun fire. It’s too bad comics don’t come with music playing because at times, I could hear some kind of blockbuster score playing under Sampere’s art. It’s just that good.
As far as the story, this issue reveals the purpose of the Cheetah in a previous issue. It makes a comment about George Washington, and one of the earlier enemies of Wonder Woman rears their head again. Overall, not much progress has been made since this is a one-shot story about Wonder Woman walking from point A to point B. Luckily, by the end of the issue, she’s made it to point B, and thus, real resolution is on the way.
There’s no denying how cool Wonder Woman #18 is in all its badassery. If you’re here for a deep, game-changing story, this issue might feel like a bit of a detour, but if you love seeing Wonder Woman in full unstoppable force, Wonder Woman #18 delivers in spades. While it doesn’t push the plot forward much, it’s a visually stunning, adrenaline-fueled march that reaffirms why Diana is one of the greatest warriors in comics.
