[BUFF ’25] There’s so much to check out at the Boston Underground Film Festival

A collection of the old and new.

For over twenty-five years the Boston Underground Film Festival has hosted the weirdest, goriest, and most creative genre films. Over the years BUFF has changed venues as necessary and went digital during the pandemic as part of the Nightstream online event. Immaculate, Watcher, and Saint Maud are just a sample of the cutting edge films to screen at the fest. Cult classics have also been a part of the festivities with The Secret of N.I.M.H. and The Witches playing. This year has another strong mix of new an older films.

Alexandre O. Phillipe is one of the best documentary filmmakers today. His work centers around cinema and has work has included examinations of David Lynch, the chestburster scene in aliens, and an in-depth interview with The Exorcist director William Friedkin. His latest film looks at the impact of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre on five artists – Patton Oswalt, Takashi Miike, Alexandra Heller-Nicholas, Stephen King, and Karyn Kusama.

Head Like a Hole

Head Like a Hole has a familiar premise to fans of genre cinema. Asher is in sever financial straits and decides to take on a strange job. Fromt there things get different. He is tasked to take up residence in a home an to measure a hole in the basement. He has to determine whether it is growing in size or not.

Re-animator 40th anniversary 4k restoration

Re-Animator is one of the most beloved genre films of all time. The cult classic will be coming to the Boston Underground Film Festival to celebrate its 40th anniversary. This will be the world premiere of the 4K restoration and star Barbara Crampton will be in attendance for what should be one of the highlights of the fest.

Short film blocks

[BUFF '25] There's so much to check out at the Boston Underground Film Festival

BUFF will also have a number of short film blocks that will range from comedy horror to animated fare to the just plain fucked up. Topics include sexuality, nostalgia, and dealing with FOMO. There will also be genre-inspired music videos that cover a variety of different musical styles.

The Boston Underground Film Festival takes place from March 19 – March 23.
