‘Wonder Woman’ #19 comes full circle with satisfying results

The visuals are incredible when it comes to Wonder Woman herself—she’s godly, calm, and assertive.

The war with The Sovereign ends this week in Wonder Woman #19. In the last issue, Wonder Woman quickly walked through everything The Sovereign could send her way, and now sitting in the Oval Office in the president’s chair, the two must have a talking to. This issue reveals the face-to-face confrontation we’ve been waiting for, and it fully connects back to the beginning while setting up a war and Trinity’s own revenge.

If you’ve wondered when The Sovereign has been narrating this entire series, this issue has your answer. Between that and Wonder Woman coming face to face with The Sovereign and new reveals to be further developed, there’s a lot here that is satisfying. The wait has been quite long for superhero comics, and this is the end and the start of more.

Wonder Woman #19 opens with the Amazon, who opened the series and started this entire mess. She’s giving birth in an undisclosed location, and soon, everything will be revealed about her. From there, a well-drawn montage catches us up on how Wonder Woman and her friends have decimated The Sovereign’s power, and soon Wonder Woman will be up close and personal with him. Before that altercation, the story cuts to Trinity questioning The Sovereign, who is imprisoned. One of the strengths of writer Tom King is that he plays with story structure to enhance each scene and add drama.

This issue has drama, from the shocking reveal of what happens to the Amazons at a future date to Wonder Woman asking The Sovereign to do one thing for her. There’s a clever tether between these scenes as well, a kind of McGuffin that will likely play a big part in the series’ future. The reveals in this issue are both satisfying and compelling as they only build toward future stories. King has been great at giving us enough to piece things together while keeping us in the dark to want more.

Daniel Sampere has shown he’s great at spectacle, but here, he also shows he’s impeccable at character acting. Most of this issue is close-ups of characters talking. Sure, there’s a panel of Wonder Woman busting in a door, but she’s already done all the fighting. Now it’s time to talk. The visuals are incredible when it comes to Wonder Woman herself. She’s godly, calm, and assertive. Even in the presence of the man who killed her love, she’s in control and stable. She’s worthy of being the greatest hero ever.

Wonder Woman #19 delivers an intense, dialogue-driven climax that brings The Sovereign arc full circle while laying the groundwork for future conflicts. Tom King’s storytelling thrives on structure and tension, while Daniel Sampere’s art makes even the quietest moments feel powerful. Though light on action, this issue cements Wonder Woman as an unstoppable force, both physically and emotionally.
