Top Chef indulged its sweet tooth this week with the elimination challenge revolving around iconic Canadian desserts. Helping with the judging was comedic actor and series super fan, Michael Cera.
First however, the contestants played Top Chef Trivia. They were divided into three teams of four and were tested on their knowledge of various ingredients. Receiving the most correct answers played twofold in the quickfire. The team’s rank determined how much cooking time they received with first place receiving the most. Then, they had to make a dish incorporating at least three of the ingredients mentioned in their correct answers. Playing with the theme of trivia, Jeopardy contestants Mattea Roach and Amy Schneider join Cera as guest judges.
The elimination challenge introduced six popular Canadian sweet treats to the chefs: figgy duff, butter tarts, Nanaimo bars, jam jams, potato chocolate cake, and date squares. After drawing knives, each competitor deconstructed their assigned dessert into a savory dish. They were given a budget of $100 to spend in St. Lawrence Market for ingredients and given two hours to cook.
Top Chef: Last Chance Kitchen played on the savory and sweet motif from the elimination. The contestants had a full hour to make one sweet and one savory dish with at least three ingredients used in both. After 30 minutes, they presented their savory dish with the loser going back to redo it following Tom Colicchio’s comments. That could set you back while making the sweet dish.
