‘Action Comics’ #1085 gives Superman a frosty new look

Attention to detail, a new setting, and the return of Kilg%re promise a bright future for the franchise.

Action Comics #1085 sets the groundwork for a promising new storyline, giving Superman a cool new costume and bringing the Man of Steel face to face with the electro-mechano-organic intelligence, Kilg%re. While Action Comics #1085 features less action than its predecessors, writer G. Willow Wilson and artist Gavin Guidry still manage to deliver an intriguing new story that will leave readers on the edge of their seats.

As mentioned above, the newest installment is less action-packed and more dialogue-heavy than one would expect. I am personally a huge fan of good dialogue, so I genuinely appreciate Wilson’s ability to establish the characters’ chemistry and personalities through verbal interactions. The intricacies of Lois Lane and Clark Kent’s marriage also shine through in this issue. Their playful banter and concern for each other reveal the softer side of their relationship. Her impeccable attention to detail is also wonderfully matched by Guidry’s art. Together, the pair flawlessly capture the essence and complexity of Clark’s double life.

DC

Action Comics #1085 sends Clark to Greenland after Lois asks him to take on an assignment she can no longer cover due to a breaking news story in Metropolis. While things begin normally enough with Clark meeting the researchers and learning more about their mission, two snowy mutant polar bears show up and attack the researchers. Luckily Superman comes to the rescue, and fans finally get to see his frosty new costume. Guidry’s white and blue spin on the Man of Steel’s iconic suit fits in perfectly with Action Comics’ new Arctic setting.

The best reveal of all (at least for me) is the unexpected return of Kilg%re. The last few pages of this issue quickly pick up the pace and lead to an explosive cliffhanger. While this classic villain’s appearance occurs in the very last pages, his upcoming role in Action Comics will likely be a welcome one for long-time DC fans and a refreshing introduction to newer or casual readers. Overall, Action Comics #1085’s attention to detail, new setting, and the return of Kilg%re promise a bright future for the franchise.
