IDW Publishing has revealed Star Trek: The Last Starship, a bold new comic book series launching September 24, 2025, from writers Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing (Star Trek, Captain America) with art by Adrián Bonilla and colors by Heather Moore.
Set during The Burn, a catastrophic event that destroyed warp cores across the galaxy, this series finds Captain James T. Kirk mysteriously brought back to life in a shattered Federation, just in time to see the ideals he once defended fall apart. Now, with a new ship and crew, Kirk must rise to the challenge of restoring hope in a lawless, post-utopian universe.
Lanzing describes The Last Starship as a darker, more literary vision of the Star Trek universe, promising both accessibility for newcomers and a rich, unexplored chapter for longtime fans. “It’s a new era, a new crew, and a very different tone,” he said, noting that the story reimagines the franchise from the ground up. Kelly adds that Kirk is the only familiar face in this future, and that exploring his legacy in a broken world offers “uncharted, groundbreaking territory” for one of fiction’s most iconic captains.
Issue #1 will arrive with several variant covers, including artwork by Francesco Francavilla, Skylar Patridge, Michael Cho (foil), and Malachi Ward (Local Comic Shop Day edition). Full-art variants by Francavilla and Cho will also be available as 1:15 incentives. Pre-orders close August 18.
