Inexpressive Kashiwada and Expressive Oota is a a Japanese web manga created by Fuyu Azuma. It was announced last March that it would receive an anime adaptation produced by Studio Polon. The series received its world premiere at Anime Expo 2025.
Genta Ozaki, a producer at NBC Universal Entertainment Japan, shared how he came upon the title. He found Inexpressive Kashiwada and Expressive Oota on social media and thought it would be exciting to adapt.
The story is a heartwarming love comedy that follows a boy named Oota, who is unable to hide his emotions and a girl named Kashiwada, who is hard to read and doesn’t express emotions. Oota spends his time teasing Kashiwada in order to grab her attention and elicit a response. Eventually the two grow closer together.
A fun little Easter egg Ozaki shared was that many of the character’s names involve word play with the sound “Ta”. It can be in reference to the Chinese character as well as the word rice field in Japanese.
You can receive a good idea of Inexpressive Kashiwada and Expressive Oota from the first episode. There is a fun dynamic exploring their opposite personalities that comes off well visually. The over exaggerated movements and reactions of Oota contrast to Kashiwada’s stoic demeanor.
There is also a fun camaraderie between Oota and his classmates Tadokoro and Sata. You always need partners in crime during your exploits. Ozaki spoke how the actors are close in real life and that clearly shows in the voice work. But the friends also show Kashiwada a degree of warmth and empathy serving as a calming presence when it comes to Oota.
The anime has very funny comedy in the first episode, but also lays the groundwork for an intriguing journey into romance.
Inexpressive Kashiwada and Expressive Oota arrives later in 2025.
