Judging by the Cover – 07/09/25 new releases

Colin shares his favorite covers from this week’s new comics.

There is a veritable cornucopia of new comics hitting stands each week. While readers often know exactly what it is they’re most interested in (those in the know have got their pull-list sitting in their comic shop’s ever-reliable hands), there is something to be said about going against that old truism and Judging a Book by Its Cover.

Some truly astounding cover art hits each and every week, and these are the ones that caught Colin’s eye the week of July 9th, 2025.

Batman and Robin #23

Variant by Rafael de Latorre

Judging by the Cover – 07/09/25 new releases

It’s a joy when a simple pose captures a whole character’s vibe so completely as Damien’s does, here. There’s a sort of youthful exuberance and disregard in his dangling, as if he couldn’t be bothered to strike as menacing (and glowering) a stance as his pops. I also love this costume design’s commitment to sneakers.

Batman: Gotham by Gaslight – A League for Justice #1

Variant by Bill Sienkiewicz

Judging by the Cover – 07/09/25 new releases

You gotta celebrate a Sienkiewicz when it happens. Few artists can strike the perfect balance of moody abstraction the way good ol’ Bill can. There isn’t a lot here to suggest that this is a Gotham by Gaslight situation — this could just be any old gothic part of Gotham — but it does speak to the timeless nature of the character: he can really exist in any Elseworld and feel right at home.

Blood Type #2

Cover by Miguel Mercado

Judging by the Cover – 07/09/25 new releases

As if swimming in the ocean wasn’t horrifying enough, now there are vampires down there ruining your seaside relaxation. The facial expressions on this Mercado piece are the most striking aspect: that’s genuine shock and horror, folks, and not just because the whole place is riddled with sharks.

I Hate Fairyland #42

Cover by Derek Laufman

Judging by the Cover – 07/09/25 new releases

I think we can all get behind unicorn Hellboy and the adorable forces of supernatural darkness. Derek Laufman really nails the whole Mignola-born aesthetic.

Magik #7

Variant by Joe Quinones

Judging by the Cover – 07/09/25 new releases

These RetroVision covers are really nailing it. This is a great blend of modern and classic — Kitty’s puffy jacket will be familiar to fans of classic stories, and Illyana’s modern buckles-and-shoulderpads look can only be fresh. I love the ridiculously wide and chunky souldsword of the modern era.

Marvel Swimsuit Special: Friends, Foes & Rivals #1

Variant by Russel Dauterman

Judging by the Cover – 07/09/25 new releases

Phoenix-branded bikini bottoms. The real hot (no pun intended) beachwear trend this season. I love that Dauterman has added a nice homage to the original costume’s lengthy sash.

Red Hulk #6

Variant by Michael and Laura Allred

Judging by the Cover – 07/09/25 new releases

Another RetroVision cover, this one leans into Allred’s pop-art Kirby-isms. Allred has always felt like an artist who could exist anywhere in comics history and not feel out of place. Exceptional, but not incongruous to the medium.

Transformers #22

Variant by Simon Parr

Judging by the Cover – 07/09/25 new releases

These contemporary Transformers designs are so slick: all sharp lines and elegant engineered curves. I also love the interplay of the colors on this cover.
