The creators of Ice Cream Man are once again redefining what a comic can be, and this time, by ditching the traditional format entirely. This October, W. Maxwell Prince, Martín Morazzo, and Chris O’Halloran are launching Ice Cream Man: The Mortal Coil Shuffle, a one-shot comic told not through stapled pages, but through a custom-designed deck of 55 playing cards.
Each card in The Mortal Coil Shuffle contains part of the story, or something stranger. Some cards connect to form full illustrations, others influence the narrative like spells, and some simply push the boundaries of what sequential art can do. The result is a totally unique, one-of-a-kind storytelling experience from Image Comics.
“More than 44 issues in, and we’re still doing crazy, never-done-before stuff,” said Morazzo. Prince added that the project was inspired by a childhood memory of learning card games from his German neighbor, Inge, while recovering from chicken pox: “The cards were alive for me back then. Let’s see if we can’t bring some to life one more time.”
The Mortal Coil Shuffle is strictly a limited release; there will be no second printings, no reprints, and no collected edition. When it’s gone, it’s gone.

The deck hits comic shops on Wednesday, October 1. Prepare to play your hand in the weirdest Ice Cream Man tale yet.
