It’s a good time to be a Godzilla fan. The King of the Monsters is celebrating his 70th birthday in style, as Alamo Drafthouse has launched a Godzilla-themed theater, and there’s been a string of comics pitting Godzilla against Marvel and DC’s heroes; IDW even launched an entire line of Godzilla comics for the Kaiju era. Super7, a staple of SDCC, is getting in on the action by transforming its store into “Godzilla Station”, a place that’s chock full of Godzilla merch.
This isn’t the first time that Super7 has delivered an epic pop-up. Last year, the store was transformed into a working pizzeria to celebrate the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ 40th anniversary, but the staff went all out for “Godzilla Station.” The entrance was mocked up to look like Godzilla was literally devouring people as they went inside, and if that wasn’t enough, a massive statue of the King of the Monsters greeted shoppers upon their arrival. Super7 employees also wore dark green Godzilla Station overalls, giving the store the look of a safe haven against Kaiju.
The merchandise on sale was appropriately Godzilla-themed, and there was a nice variety. In addition to Godzilla Station T-shirts and jackets, there were miniature action figures, trading cards, and Godzilla Minus One blind boxes. Godzilla puzzles also lined the shelves, and there was even a collection of Mechagodzilla figures that had an “X-ray” feature where you could pull apart the metal beast’s armor to reveal its inner workings.
Toward the end of my visit, I was sent home with a bag full of Godzilla gear, and it all looked great. Super7 founder Bryan Flynn told me last year that the company always strives to go bigger for each Comic-Con, but the Godzilla Station is going to be hard to top. Judging from the line that formed outside, Super7 is going to have a banner Comic-Con this year as well.
