DC x Sonic the Hedgehog has been an immense joy to read, mostly for how Team Sonic and the Justice League interact with each other’s worlds (and for the DC-inspired makeover that Sonic and his friends have received.) But all good things must come to an end, and DC x Sonic the Hedgehog #5 does so in glorious fashion, seeing the League and Team Sonic unite to fight against Darkseid.
The best part of the issue is seeing both teams reunite, especially in the beginning. Whether it’s Silver and John Stewart discussing the Green Lantern Corps – and how Guy Gardner is an acquired taste at best – or Batman and Shadow doing what they do best and brood, Ian Flynn writes these meetups with style, making them just as fun as the inevitable battle against Darkseid.
That battle is just as epic as you’d think it’d be, thanks to Adam Bryce Thomas. Thomas manages to draw some pretty epic images, including Team Sonic and the Justice League charging into battle, Superman and Knuckles crashing through mountains of stone, or Darkseid using the power of a Chaos Emerald to transform the Ragna Rock into his battle fortress, complete with massive rock men and fountains of energy.

But the real standouts are the moments with Sonic and the Flash. Thomas draws the duo dashing through the Ragna Rock at high speed, utilizing their respective powers to finally defeat him. It’s a joy to witness, especially with the way the movement is depicted. From beginning to end, it feels like you’re actually along with Flash and Sonic as they race to save the world.
Finally, Matt Herms’ colors make every page pop. Ragna Rock more than lives up to its name, with shadows and dark reds that make it look like a hellish volcano. The Justice League and Team Sonic counter this with the brighter colors that they’re decked out in, providing a variety of hues based on their uniforms and respective powers. But at the forefront are red and yellow, thanks to Flash and Sonic (Especially once Sonic uses the Chaos Emeralds and goes into his golden Super Sonic form.)
Things do end up tied up in a relatively neat bow, and there’s a tease for a potential sequel in the final pages. DC x Sonic the Hedgehog #5 ends this crossover on a high note, packing its pages full of all the action and team dynamics you’d expect. Sonic even puts it best: “We had a fantastic adventure, met some awesome people, and came out fine on the other side.” What more could you want in a crossover?
