Marvel is revisiting one of the most groundbreaking X-Men stories ever with X-Men of Apocalypse, a six-issue event series written by Jeph Loeb — the architect behind the original saga — and featuring art by Eisner-nominated Simone Di Meo. Launching in September with X-Men of Apocalypse Alpha #1 and wrapping in Omega #1 this December, the series celebrates the 30th anniversary of the legendary ’90s crossover while charting an all-new chapter.
Today, Marvel revealed four covers for X-Men of Apocalypse #1, arriving in November. Simone Di Meo teases the long-awaited return of Nate Grey, a.k.a. X-Man. Arthur Adams delivers a striking cover highlighting Rogue, Magneto, and Gambit’s complicated triangle, while rising star Fanyang offers a bold take on Blink, one of the original event’s breakout characters. And in a major homecoming, Joe Madureira — one of the defining artists of the first Age of Apocalypse — returns to the franchise for the first time in decades with a powerful Storm cover. Madureira will provide variant covers for every issue of the event, including special virgin editions.
The stakes couldn’t be higher. In X-Men of Apocalypse #1, readers will finally see the long-promised clash: the X-Men of Apocalypse against the Uncanny X-Men. Picking up in the aftermath of the original crossover’s explosive finale, this new series follows the Age of Apocalypse’s surviving X-Men as they cross into the Marvel Universe to save their collapsing reality, only to find themselves in direct conflict with their classic counterparts.
Di Meo expressed both excitement and pressure when talking to Chris Hassan on X-Men Monday. That’s because he’s stepping into such an iconic story. “I’m really lucky to work on this project — but sometimes, I also feel under pressure for this reason, because a lot of people know Jeph’s work and I need to do my best to create something special with him,” he told AIPT.
Loeb emphasized the importance of bringing Nate Grey back into the spotlight. “An Age of Apocalypse celebration wouldn’t be complete without X-MAN! I’m thrilled to return to mutantkind’s greatest psychic powerhouse, who’s caught between two worlds as his home universe collides with his current one—with disastrous results!”
X-Men of Apocalypse Alpha #1 lands September 3, with subsequent chapters releasing monthly through December. Preorders are available now at comic shops everywhere.
