Liam Sharp brings back ‘Spawn: The Dark Ages’ with a gritty new miniseries

Sharp isn’t just writing the series; he’s also handling inks and colors, bringing readers a sweeping saga of kings, gods, and the Devil’s Spawn set against the turbulent era of post-Roman Britain.

Spawn: The Dark Ages is making its long-awaited comeback this October in the form of a brand-new six-issue miniseries from Liam Sharp (Wonder Woman, StarHenge), courtesy of Image Comics and Todd McFarlane Productions. To celebrate its launch, the first issue will ship with four covers: two by Sharp, a blank sketch variant, and a striking 1:50 incentive by Ryan Brown.

Sharp isn’t just writing the series; he’s also handling inks and colors, bringing readers a sweeping saga of kings, gods, and the Devil’s Spawn set against the turbulent era of post-Roman Britain.

“Coming back to Spawn: The Dark Ages has been a joy,” Sharp said. “My goal was to create something fresh and approachable, without requiring readers to have prior knowledge of Spawn or the historical period. I wanted to take it back to the roots, in the 5th century, where folklore and pagan traditions were fading and Christianity was just starting to dominate. At the same time, I wanted to weave a sweeping melodrama full of love, betrayal, and court intrigue—echoing the Arthurian legends, which our King Aurelianus was a kind of prototype for. And I tried to give the series its own literary flavor, to firmly place it in that world and time.”

At the center of the story is Erlking Ulegrave, the Devil’s Spawn and master of the Wild Hunt. With Saxons pressing in from the east, Picts threatening in the north, and Hibernians striking from the west, the newly crowned King Aurelianus Ambrosius must seek out this dark figure and strike a dangerous bargain to save his realm. But can a Christian king truly trust the Erlking—or is he risking damnation itself?

Todd McFarlane, Spawn creator and Image Comics President, added: “I’ve been waiting a long time to get Liam back on this book. His vision for the Dark Ages Spawn wowed me decades ago, and I couldn’t be more excited for fans to finally see his return. Expect stories that are gritty, dangerous, and unflinching—because survival in this world is anything but guaranteed.”
