Eisner Award-winner Skottie Young is bringing a classic icon into the mix; Popeye the Sailor Man will guest star in I Hate Fairyland #45 this October from Image Comics. The spinach-loving sailor joins Gert’s chaotic world in an issue illustrated by guest cartoonist Jay Fosgitt (Marvel Fairy Tales, Bodie Troll).
“Jay [Fosgitt] is such a talented cartoonist, and we’re lucky to have him join us,” Young said. “Popeye is one of Jay’s favorite characters, and he draws him beautifully. With Popeye now in the public domain, it felt like the perfect time to bring him aboard. I Hate Fairyland is exactly the kind of book where anything can happen, so why not?”
This isn’t the first time Young has pulled in legendary characters for surprise appearances—previous issues have featured everyone from Dorothy and Toto to Pinocchio, Peter Pan, and even Steamboat Willie’s Mickey Mouse.
In issue #45, Gert and Larry take to the high seas on the hunt for a monstrous creature that might hold the secret to sending Gert home. Unfortunately, they’re quickly out of their depth—and that’s when Popeye shows up to lend a hand.
