‘Mr. Terrific: Year One’ #6 sticks the landing

The conclusion of Mr. Terrific’s first year is here, but how does it shape his future, his legacy, and the man he becomes?

I am genuinely going to miss Mr. Terrific: Year One, which wraps up this week. Thankfully, it closes on such a strong set of thoughtful notes, leaving the door wide open for future stories in the greater DC Universe. Consistency has been the backbone of this book, and writer Al Letson, along with artists Edwin Galmon, Valentine De Landro, and Marissa Louise, brought their absolute best to Mr. Terrific’s Year One. Whether you’re a longtime fan or someone drawn in by the new Superman film, this series has offered a rewarding, character-driven journey.

Most of the narrative threads tie up here, but one element in particular stands tall: the narration reveal. Letson executes this reveal brilliantly, showing that Michael Holt has been speaking to a very specific someone across all six issues. It reframes the entire series in the best possible way, and I now want to reread everything with this new context in mind. The revelation doesn’t just tie Holt’s past and present together; it elevates both of them. It clarifies how deeply Holt’s loss shaped him, and how becoming Mr. Terrific has given him a new kind of fullness, an earned emotional evolution that sticks with you. This finale easily positions Letson to take on a solo ongoing or even a Terrifics revival, and I would be first in line.

This issue also flips the series’ established structure. Instead of the usual brief present-day opener followed by extended flashback, Letson begins in the past and closes in the present, a choice that immediately signals emotional payoff. It works wonderfully, especially as the story teases broader DCU relevance, Darkseid continues to loom large across DC’s current event, and positions both Mr. Terrific and Athena Prescott for meaningful future roles. Prescott, in particular, emerges as a nuanced villain capable of carrying her own weight in Holt’s rogues gallery.

Without spoiling key moments, this finale delivers exactly what readers of the whole run, or those waiting for the trade, are hoping for: closure, momentum, and heart. Letson honors Mr. Terrific’s growing footprint across the DCU, syncing well with his appearances in The Flash by Jeremy Adams, while still giving this series its own identity. The art team shines throughout, and in specific moments, especially the iconic father/son scene illustrated by Edwin Galmon, lands with emotional power. Marissa Louise once again proves she should be DC’s go-to when they need that Bronze Age or ’90s tonal magic. Mr. Terrific: Year One sticks the landing, and issue #6 is a beautiful capstone that reinforces why Michael Holt remains one of DC’s most compelling heroes.

Mr. Terrific: Year One #6 delivers an emotionally resonant, thematically rich conclusion that elevates both Michael Holt’s personal journey and his place in the DC Universe. Al Letson’s final chapter reshapes the entire series with a powerful narration reveal, deepens Holt’s emotional arc, and positions both Mr. Terrific and Athena Prescott for meaningful futures. At the same time, the art team delivers standout, emotionally charged, and character-driven moments. A fulfilling and heartfelt finale and miniseries.
