Darth Maul returns in a brutal new era, and Marvel’s prequel series reveals his darkest plan yet

Plus, don’t miss a preview of ‘STAR WARS: SHADOW OF MAUL’ #1!

Darth Maul is set to take center stage again next year with Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord, a new animated series picking up after the final season of Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Ahead of the show’s debut, Marvel Comics will launch STAR WARS: SHADOW OF MAUL in March — a five-issue prequel written by Benjamin Percy, who previously tackled the character in Star Wars: Darth Maul – Black, White & Red, with art by Star Wars: Jedi Knights illustrator Madibek Musabekov.

The upcoming Disney+ series follows Maul as he attempts to rebuild his criminal empire on Janix, a world still free of Imperial control. The comic will introduce fans to this new locale and its cast, including Captain Brander Lawson and his droid partner Two Boots, as they dig into the unsettling activity unfolding on the planet.

Described as a neon-drenched, shadow-filled world beyond the Empire’s reach, Janix is a place where Lawson is trying to uphold the law in a place that barely has any. With Two Boots at his side, he’ll navigate rival crime bosses and the emerging danger posed by Maul himself.

“I’ve said it before: I’m a giant Star Wars nerd,” Percy shared. “My previous experience writing in a galaxy far, far away—Darth Maul – Black, White, and Red, Boba Fett – Black, White, and Red—was an absolute delight. But those were one-shots. Flirtations with the franchise. With Shadow of Maul, I’m able to share a more expansive story about one of my favorite characters, while also exploring a fresh angle on the Star Wars universe.

“This is a sci-fi story, but it’s also a crime story,” he continued. “It’s a story about cops, criminal syndicates, a neon-lit, shadow-alleyed city that hides many sins and secrets. I’m teamed up with an artist who’s already a Star Wars veteran and legend: Madibek Musabeckov. His art is gritty and grounded and perfectly matches the noir tone. We’ve been in close contact with Lucasfilm—reading scripts and watching episodes of this fantastic new animated series—and our story will serve as a prelude to what viewers will see play out on the screen.”

Fans can preview covers by Derrick Chew, AKA, and Björn Barends — plus a first look at interior pages — and preorder STAR WARS: SHADOW OF MAUL #1 at their local comic shop now. For more details, visit Marvel.com.
