Oni Press is set to unleash The Demon of Beausoleil, a sweeping gothic fantasy from writer/artist Mari Costa, arriving today. Clocking in at 312 pages, the graphic novel blends demon-slaying spectacle, romantic tension, and sharp character work into a lavish queer romance set in a pseudo–Victorian London crawling with darkness. To wet your whistles, check out an exclusive preview below!
At the center of the story is Helianthes—better known as Hell—a cambion born touched by demons. Horns, claws, and tail included. A former socialite turned exorcist, Hell cuts through the supernatural underworld with confidence to spare and just enough charm to get under everyone’s skin. Everyone, that is, except Elias: his weary, perpetually irritated bodyguard who sees past the infernal aesthetics and treats Hell less like a mythical terror and more like a walking headache.
Together, the pair patrol the shadowy streets of this reimagined London, banishing demons and stirring up trouble in equal measure. But while facing down monsters is second nature to them, confronting what’s growing between them is far more dangerous. As Hell finds himself drawn to Elias—and Elias becomes increasingly aware that his feelings may run deeper than duty—the line between personal desire and looming catastrophe begins to blur.
Costa wastes no time establishing Hell as a force of personality, throwing readers straight into the chaos.
“It’s pretty tough to introduce a character in media res like this, but the goal is always to convey as much personality as possible right off the bat,” Costa said. “For instance, hopefully by reading this introductory scene, you know Helianthes’s personality is that of a guy you wish you could punch in the face!”
That balance—between charm and irritation, affection and frustration—defines The Demon of Beausoleil. It’s a story about half-demons and human hearts, about love blooming amid exorcisms, and about the emotional risks that can be far more frightening than any monster lurking in the dark.
A world of demons, devotion, and doomed romance awaits when The Demon of Beausoleil arrives from Oni Press on January 27, 2026.
