‘Supernatural Valentine’s Day Special 2026’ is all about the horrors of heartbreak

A surprisingly deep story that’s fitting for the holiday.

Looking at Supernatural Valentine’s Day Special 2026, some fans might be confused. After all, this is a comic based on a show where two brothers track down and fight all manner of supernatural creatures. A Halloween special seems more up Supernatural‘s alley; an argument could even be made for a Christmas one. Yet the creative team of Preeti Chibber and Pasquale Qualano crafts a story that’s perfectly suited to the holiday, if a little bittersweet.

“A Town Without Love” brings the Winchester brothers to Huntington, West Virginia, where they investigate a mysterious death that appears to be the work of a supernatural creature. That isn’t the only strange thing going on in Huntington: couples, old or young, newly formed or decades strong, are erupting in vicious fights and breaking up. While Dean is more concerned with tracking down the mystery animal, Sam is convinced there’s something behind the couples that are breaking up…and his suspicions are soon confirmed.

Chibber draws on the thread of love throughout Supernatural Valentine’s Day Special 2026, and how it’s affected the Winchesters. Sam became involved in the family business of hunting monsters because of what happened to his girlfriend, Jess; the Winchesters’ father, John, began hunting after a demon killed his wife; and it turns out the breakups are caused by a supernatural entity who suffered her own heartbreak. Love is a messy thing, and this story doesn’t shy away from it. Neither does it shy away from the fact that love can be beautiful.

Chibber also gets the perfect mix of humor, horror, and, well, heart that made Supernatural such a standout. Dean is his usual sarcastic self, while Sam ends up bringing brains and heart to the table. In one of the best scenes of the comic, he’s told by someone that they can take the grief of Jess’ death away from him. He declines, saying he doesn’t want to forget what happened because he truly loved her. It’s stuff like this that makes me hope for more Chibber-penned tales in the Supernatural ongoing.

Qualano’s no slouch himself. His artwork not only delivers pitch-perfect visages of the Winchester brothers, but also goes places the TV show can’t. Take the mysterious beast that Sam and Dean are tracking; when it’s fully revealed, it looks like something that crawled out of your darkest nightmares, with a gaping maw chock full of razor-sharp teeth and fiery red eyes. That’s not something you could bring to life on a CW budget – thank God that comics allow for a nearly unlimited canvas to bring this type of action to life.

I also like that Qualano populates Huntington with a variety of couples and people. Throughout the book, you see an elderly couple, two men arguing about visiting one of their partners’ parents, and a Goth girl. All of these characters are arranged in a sequence that plays with different panels and figure placements to represent how connected these couples once were.

Supernatural Valentine’s Day Special 2026 shows that heartbreak can be its own horror, with a surprisingly deep story that’s fitting for the holiday. The question is: what holiday is next to get the Supernatural treatment?

Chibber crafts a tale full of humor, horror and more than a little heartbreak.
Qualano takes the advantage of the comics medium to draw the big battles you usually wouldn't see in a Supernatural story.
A reminder that the core of Supernatural is based on love.
