Real-life escape artist platypus inspires wild new YA graphic novel

A strange but true zoo breakout becomes a heartfelt and adventurous graphic novel about freedom, courage, and choosing your own path.

A little-known moment from 1957 is getting new life in graphic novel form.

Maverick, the young adult imprint from Mad Cave Studios, has announced Penelope’s Escape from the Platypusary, a historical fiction graphic novel from writer Arianna Irwin (Mean Girls: Senior Year, 101 Dalmatians: Penny’s Big Splash) and Italian artist Prenzy (On the Stump, Flawed). The book also features colors by Nicolo Laporini and lettering by Micah Myers.

The story draws from a real event involving Penelope, a platypus who escaped the Bronx Zoo and avoided a planned pairing with another platypus named Cecil. The graphic novel expands this strange historical anecdote into an adventurous and humorous journey centered on personal freedom and self-determination.

In the book, Penelope flees captivity with help from unexpected companions. Her escape becomes a larger exploration of choice and independence as her journey unfolds.

Irwin said she immediately connected with the story after discovering it, describing Penelope as a bold figure who refused to follow the path laid out for her. She explained she wanted to give Penelope a grand adventure that reflected her real-life determination and hopes readers will find humor and encouragement in the story while recognizing the importance of making their own decisions.

Prenzy shared enthusiasm for collaborating on the project, explaining the book provides a thoughtful way to introduce readers to discussions around animal welfare. Prenzy added that they hope Penelope’s story encourages readers to think about compassion and the treatment of animals.

The graphic novel runs 168 pages and targets readers ages 14 and up. The story focuses on independence, showing how it develops through action and difficult choices. It also presents rebellion as something that can take quiet forms rather than dramatic ones.

Penelope’s Escape from the Platypusary arrives June 9, 2026, in paperback and hardcover editions. The book will be available through comic shops, bookstores, and Maverick’s website.
